well, this was one surprise of an episode.

the surprise being that, although maybe not as packed with laughs as some past episodes of Futurama has been, it made up for it with an excellent science fiction plot - with an amazing twist ending to it that I am NOT going to spoil for anyone. Let's just say that the third act is a real mind-blower worthy of a serious sci-fi series.

Still, for those of you who want laughs with your drama, they're there. From the gym scenes where Zoidberg goes on his hormone-induced rampage, to the action on Defcon 10 (his home planet), there's bound to be something for everyone. Bender is at his most devious behaviour in this episode as well. Star Trek TOS fans will also notice some nice touches from TWO classic episodes in this story. Oh, and did I mention we get to see Leela and Amy as nekkid as they'll allow on Fox?

ONE WARNING - if you were one of those people upset with the ending of the recent Simpsons episode "Faith Off", you may want to be aware that something equally disgusting happens to Fry in this episode in which he...well, let's just say, as Happy The Cow would say, that those of you with weak stomachs may want to switch to the Disney Channel :)

SUPERMAN: in the origin story of the superhero, a doctor tries to give Clark Kent an injection and breaks the needle on his skin, much like what happens when Farnsworth tries to give Zoidberg a sedative.

CYRANO DE BERGERAC - Fry's subtle coaching to Zoidberg on how to talk to Edna is similar to scenes from this classic romance novel.

STAR TREK:

"Amok Time" - loads of parallels to the famous episode where Spock must return to Vulcan and mate, or die!

"The Gamesters Of Triskileon" - the music the organist is playing in the fight to the death is the same music played on the soundtrack from this episode when Kirk is fighting a gladiator (and what is even funnier is Fry's reaction when he hears the music). Note - sharp-eared Simpsons fans will also recognize this music from a cut-in-syndication scene from the episode "Deep Space Homer", in which Homer and Barney battle to the death in a parody of that same ST-TOS episode.

DEF-CON 4 - science fiction movie about a post-nuclear holocaust earth, title of which is similar to the name of Zoidberg's home planet (and isn't it also used as a description of levels of enviromental hazard?)

I was one of those people, but I wasn't as bothered by this scene as I was by the one in "Faith Off." We've already seen that 31st-century medical science far outstrips our own, so that a severed arm probably is considered a treatable injury. (I mean, they transplant Fry's whole *head* next week!)

If I wanted to be medically nit-picky, I could point out that Fry should have bled to death in the time it took to resolve the episode, but I'll chalk this up to artistic license.

Well it might be treatable sooner then you think. There have already been 2 cases of hand transplants (hmm i think its 2 anyway). In the case I know he has lived for months with it and it has not been rejected yet. He does not have full mobility with it, but its still very impressive.

I found a couple news articles about it. In fact there are two stories. One was the one I mentioned about the hand transplant. The other is more like Fry's case, if not worse.It wasnt just a hand trasplant, it was a double arm transplant!!!! The future is now people :-).

Minor nit-pick, "Cyrano de Bergerac" by Edmund Rostand is a play, not a novel. If it had been a novel, the movie versions would have been atrocities and Ferrer wouldn't have gotten his Oscar.
