Hostnames, and stuff on 2ACV16 :-)

Well, it turns out I'll probably have a high-speed internet connection next year (woohoo!) This means I'll be spending all summer thinking up an imaginative, yet nerdy, hostname for my computer.

At the moment, it's 'nutrimat', and I had wondered about 'hactar', but now I'm considering 'chapek9'. I don't want anything obvious like 'bender' - it's got to be comparatively obscure. And easy to type. :-)

Any ideas?

Oh, and so save even more posts from me, a review type thingy of the season finale of Futurama, which I've finally seen. It was fun, but not my favourite - I like the details of the normal plots in Futurama, and I thought that these mini-stories were just too short. They started, then finished, with little in the middle. My favourite by far was the Action Rangers one - it was dark, nerdy, and had Stephen Hawking in it.

Obvious, but I liked it - the power switch on the side of the Mega-Bender. 'Off' has a Bender's head with eyes closed, 'On' has a head with eyes open.

The vicious duck. Irrelevant, but I read something in New Scientist earlier today about a slightly more vicious duck - one 3m tall with a massive flesh-tearing beak. New fossil evidence shows that the (fortunately?) extinct thunder birds from Australia were actually fairly closely related to ducks, and may have been carnivorous. Well, they had massively strong beaks and jaw muscles, could run fairly quickly, had pretty large brains and good eyesight - does that sound like a herbivore to you? :-)

The empty, white nothingness at the end was reminiscent of part of the Matrix. Which in itself was reminiscent of the huge, white studio they filmed Blue Peter in. Biddy Baxter really knew how to freak out small children... :-/

And now for my fortnightly nerdy, Futurama-related calculation. There may be big, chunky mistakes, so be warned.

Approximate volume of stadium:

Radius ~ 100m Height ~ 50m

Volume = 1.6 * 10^6 m^3

Mass of water in stadium = 1.6 * 10^9 kg

Specific heat capacity of water = 4.2 J g^-1 K^-1 = 4200 J kg^-1 K^-1

Assuming water starts at 293K, and boils at 373K, temperature change = 80K

Energy required to boil water in stadium = 5.4 * 10^14 J

Energy produced burning 1kg ethanol = 2.4 * 10^7 J

Therefore, assuming 100% efficiency, Bender would need to burn about 22500 tonnes of ethanol in order to boil the contents of the stadium. Quite how many bottles of Olde Fortran that would be is left as an exercise for the reader.

I quite like the idea of naming my PC after planets in Futurama - that would be nice and nerdy. :-)

I knew it was originally 'Capek', but I was under the impression that it was spelt differently in Futurama - but actually I can't remember it ever being written down. Well, 'capek9' it is then. And the naming scheme for any other computers I might procure will be after other planets in Futurama.

Now to design a nice new /etc/issue for my PC's new identity. :-)

Your modified calculation gives the energy required to turn all the water into steam, not just to make it reach boiling point. To get a more accurate measurement of the energy required, then one would have to figure out how much of the water was converted into steam, the specific heat capacity of alien crustacean, the mass of Mega-Zoidberg, exactly how cooked Zoidberg was, and so on.

Which I can't be bothered to do, since it is, after all, just a cartoon. :-)

Now to calculate the power consumption of all the robots on Capek 9...

In addition to the 80K temperature change, you must also include the latent heat to change water into steam (ie boiling). Your calculations describe how much energy it would take to heat water from 293K to 373K, but not turn it into steam.

The latent heat of vaporisation of water (L subscript v) = 2.257 MJ/kg ("Physics for Scientists and Engineers", Tipler, 3rd Edition)

Energy require to boil water = 3.6 * 10^15 J.

Total energy required = ~4.2 * 10^15 J.

So your ethanol calculation would be out by a similar factor.

Or maybe it's just a cartoon show, as another poster suggested.

Well, the obvious error in using metric measurements notwithstanding, I think the fact that the stadium was not an empty cylinder might have negatively affected the accuracy of the initial volume calculation.
