Futurama no longer funny

I am getting that feeling. Maybe it is because I watch too much Family Guy, I don't know...

Why? Where else can you see a dog get addicted to cocaine and hear newscasters make comments like "well I don't really like black people". Futurama is more of a satire making fun of society and family guy just pushes the limit like southpark.

Why? BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE LEAST BIT FUNNY. I don't care if it "pushes the limit". Those examples you used don't occur to me as being funny. Am I offended or shocked by them? No, but it's obvious that they have no comedic merit. Seth MacFarlane needs to realize that absurdity and being offensive can be used for great results in comedy, but their very existence isn't enough. The show is simply terrible, and that's why I hate it. "South Park" "pushes the limit" but it's funny. "The Simpsons" doesn't really push the limit and it's funny. I am more likely to fall on the floor laughing at Family Guy than Futurama. The quick one liners and sight gags are great for that. On the other hand, after repeated viewing, Futurama hold up better.

I don't hang out on a Family Guy board because the humor is very obvious and there just isn't a lot to discuss. Futurama is far more subtle and make far more cultural references to talk about.

Futurama is long attention span humor Family Guy is short attention span humor. Which one I watch depends on what I'm in the mood for. Both are very funny in there own way.

I appreciate all kinds of comedy. I think the funniest movie ever made is "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb" yet I still like sophomoric stuff like old 80's sex comedies. I really don't have any specific guideline of what I find funny. I will literally give any comedic endeavor a chance. That said I maintain that "Family Guy" is an absolute vacuum of comedy. It's horrid. I don't find it offensive in the least, it doesn't contradict any pre-concieved notions I have about comedy, it just fucking sucks. Every time I've ever seen "Family Guy", I've understood every joke, I just find them painfully unfunny. You can see the jokes coming from a mile away, and when they finally pay off, they aren't even funny. While torturing you with painful setups and disappointing delivery, the show will often take on a "*wink*, look at how great and clever we are" attitude that turns the show from simply bad to irritatingly bad. In psychology circles, this could be termed "reaction formation." You are afraid that you yourself are not funny so you act like an expert on humor and claim that Family Guy sucks, when obviously a lot of other people find it to be very funny. Or, the fact that you don't find it funny makes you worried because you fear other people are getting the humor but you aren't, so you tell everyone it's not funny and stupid to protect your self-esteem. For example, gay-bashers often make it very obvious to everyone that they don't like gay people, though really they're insecure about their heterosexuality. Or anti-porn crusaders that are always "confiscating" porn which allows them to be exposed to it. Notice that you keep going back to watch Family Guy.

(Don't take this too seriously. I am kidding, though your rant does look suspiciously like reaction formation.)

My theory is that our friend here really doesn't get most of the jokes and visual gags on FG. In the FG newsgroup, he listed his favorite shows and they were all from the 90's (many from the last few years). Since FG contains innumerable 80s (and earlier) references, I'd have to believe he can't possibly understand many of the jokes. FG is not a show for the young'uns.

Why the competition? I love both Futurama and Family Guy, they're both funny for their different styles of humour. And they're both being cancelled. Surely the two camps should come together to try and beat some sense into Fox, rather than getting at each others' throats.

Yeah. "Family Guy" is funny in the respect that it makes you weep for humanity. "Futurama" is just plain funny. I guess they do have different styles of comedy, the main difference being the presence of success (comedic success, sadly not ratings success) in "Futurama's" approach.
