I'm really sorry about all this. The truth is I've been doing all this trolling for my own amusement. I admit, I find the trolling style of the ATGS trolls to be hilarious. I really wasn't trying to upset anyone, and I had no intentions of "destroying" any newsgroup. If I seriously hurt anyone's feelings, I'm sorry. I admit, some of my posts may have been over-the-top, but I do try to restrain myself from crossing too far over the line. But, I guess I haven't worked. Just know that I never really meant any of the ridiculous things I've said. This time I really promise that I will stop all this trolling. I'll find better ways to spend my free time, like reading, or spending time with friends, or maybe taking up a hobby.

I hope nobody is going to try and get me in trouble. I realize that what I've been doing wasn't right, but there are far worse things going on in this world. Just recently, somebody robbed and sexually assaulted several people in the vicinity of the Rutgers campus. Now seriously, do you think you should be worrying about obnoxious newsgroup posts when there are things like this going on? I am not a bad person at heart...all I was doing was having a little fun, and I guess it was at other people's expenses. Yes, it's insensitive, but it's not something that somebody should get in serious trouble for. But, in any case, I do need to get a life, so my restraint from trolling will just be the first step of me getting back in touch with the world.

And, I will admit who I am. My name is Michael Bode, I'm from New Brunswick, NJ, and I'm a second-year Rutgers student majoring in journalism and media studies.

You crossed the line when you intentionally posted your first SPAM message, but anyone can forgive one infraction if that's all there is. Some of us can even tolerate a few, if it stops. But you didn't stop.

You crossed too far over the line by the time you had cross-posted a few SPAM messages, and after cross-posting and mass-posting literally hundreds of SPAM messages to several newsgroups for several weeks, I hope the relevant authorities use you as the example of what should happen to those who abuse the Internet.

Ordinary people using the Internet would never try to get anyone in trouble, and we would certainly never do that to you. Rather, you got yourself in trouble, and we are merely doing what we can to prevent this type of trouble in the future.

You have to understand something: your actions have damaged the integrity of a very small space on the Internet. If we allow your actions to go unpunished, then that sets a very nasty precedent, potentially allowing others to damage the integrity of much larger spaces of the Internet. As a concerned "netizen", I will not allow that to happen.

Now, an analogy: Apologizing after the kill does not earn the killer immunity from punishment according to the law. If you are still a student at Rutgers at the end of this semester, I will be incredibly disappointed in the university.

Understand that none of this is personal. I do not know you and I do not wish bad things to come to you. However, I do believe that your actions deserve punishment, and I hope that Rutgers, AOL, and Google can step up for the sake of the Internet and deliver to you what you have earned.
