What show WOULD you compare it to?

Hey, everyone!

I just checked for new newsgroups tonight, and sure enough, here's a.t.f! Yippee!

Reading various posts, I've noticed a running thread is comparing Futurama with The Simpsons.

Well, of course not! It's apples and oranges! Sure, created by the same person, animation style's the same (pretty much), but two entirely different shows.

Now: what show would it be fair to compare it with?

An SF comedy... how about "Quark"? "Far Out Space Nuts"? "Josie and the Pussycats In Outer Space"?

Ideas, anyone?

Actually, having Fry and co meet Adam Quark and company would be funny,

Hell does anyone remember the Coneheads cartoon series. It was alot more truer to the snl sketch than that overproduced movie ever was.

I *loved* "Quark." True, I was only eight years old when the show was on, so my taste may be suspect...but yes, that show is remembered (quite fondly, in fact) by many people around my age.

[raises eyebrow, a la Spock] Quark came out in 1977, after Star Wars. I was 27 at the time.

As a side note; my own idea for a 'team-up' movie is one that, alas, could never be done now: Maxwell Smart and Inspector Cluseau. (Chaos steals the Pink Panther Diamond...) They'd have half the planet decimated by the end of the movie!

I like futurama, but I can't help but compare it to Red Dwarf.

The shows are VERY similar.

Red Dwarf premise: Lovable slob is suspended in time, awakes to a group of obnoxious zany companions.

Frye: (Lovable slob with looser job.) = Lister: (Loveable slob with looser job) Bender: = Cryten (Both are robots who watch android sitcoms and have hang-ups) Lela: = Lela from Dr. Who? or even Kochanski from Red Dwarf (Lister's love interest) Same "Tough girl" type of character.

Dr. (whatchacalit?) Frye's relative: = Holly: Super intelligent computer who looks after the crew and occasionally messes with their heads.

Anyway, I like I said, I like the show but it really reminds me of Red Dwarf. However, futurama will probably stay much better than Red Dwarf. Red Dwarf has been stupid the last several seasons. I hope Futurama gives us 50 years of great comedy.

I agree... Red Dwarf was funny for about 2 and a half seasons. (About 15 episodes ) The rest of it got worse and worse. And once Rimmer left it just became pointless.
