Actually I translated the Titanic episode in about 2 hours with about 5 phrases of common language expressions missing that I did not know about and got positive comments on it in the ng.
And I did not have
a) the official script b) additional information on the jokes directly from the writers c) personal american friends I could ask via mail for explaining some phrases
Ivar stated in interviews that he had all of these. And even if 3500,- DEM isn't too much for an episode it's no excuse for wrong translations

The thing we're complaining about here is that there are severe mistakes in translation. In order to do it right, you would either require an extensive knowledge about any possible references from anglophonic cultures or you would have to do research. It would be a difficult task to find a suitable person for the first suggestion and the latter needs time. You could do a first translation in several hours, but you would need to go through it over and over again and look for flaws in logic and other awkward bits in order to make it fit perfectly. That's why I would suggest at least two guys doing the job.
Apart from them being just the wrong persons for the job, they also do one episode a day in dubbing, don't they?

a better way to do it would be one person who is a native english speaker that can speak german, then a german who can speak english. they could conference and such to get a reasonably acurate translation

That's what I said. Of course they don't want to because they don't give a damn. Pro7 is not poor enough to claim that a better dubbing would be too expensive.
I'd mind the character voices and all that stuff more if it weren't for those embarrassing mistakes. With the meaning of a word completely scrambled up and the voice actors just continuing their work without even doubting what they are saying, it gets pretty obvious that they treat their job with no care at all. If you can translate "upbeat" with the meaning of "beat up" without any of the persons involved noticing the lack of sense, you could pretty much also give them some Michael Jackson lyrics to read.

I just wanted to point out that 24 hrs is too short to translate one episode as you have to do additional research instead of merely translating the dialogues lip-synch from scratch in front of your TV, which Ivar obviously does. This research can be complicated, but sometimes it would even suffice to look up certain words in a dictionary. He seems to know better, though - so "upbeat" simply _has_ to be the same as "beat up". Erm... ok.
Translating as a job is still not honoured enough, and not many people care about this topic. It's just something that needs to be done, and mostly has to be done quickly. People want to read the new "Harry Potter" book, so there has to be a translation pronto. The audience reading the german version will not read the original, so it doesn't matter whether the translation is appropriate. It just has to be there. *shrug*
