Why would such a robot get manufactured? It serves no purpose, not even entertainment as far as I can tell.

To be fair, the 4-disc extended edition was announced before the 2-disc set was released :)
This is actually discussed in a different context on the Season 2 DVD commentaries (Xmas Story). They are talking about homeless robots there - which seemingly are only constructed for the purpose of being homeless. The answer by the team was that either they were never built by man to serve man but by other robots or that there is no explanation (blame the wizards).
