The studio background in sqrt(2) News is perpetually dark, with streetlights and everything. Could this be due to the ever worsening atmospheric pollution in Los Angeles getting so bad that it blocks out all sunlight? Quite possibly...

That reminds me of new years eve 1999, I went up a hill with friends a lit a massive load of fireworks at midnight, it was fun, and so did many people on the surrounding hills and down in the valleys, fireworks going off for miles around, it reminded me of Blade Runner :)
We all decided we must do that every year now, buy fireworks when they're available for fireworks night on nov 5th and save them to light at midnight new years eve on top of the hill, the louder the better.

PS..........Houston, TX, recently became America's official smog capitol........here in LA, it's MUCH better than when I was a kid, much better. I think the countless gaping fissures opened by all the quakes since then have just sucked a lot of the smog underground, along with many cars and smokers.......every little bit helps!

Well, NNY would still be three time zones (or the equivalent in angle of the sun) ahead of my home town, so evening news in NNY would then as it does now happen while California is sunny. So increasing darkness in the air in LA is a possibility. Or maybe the union rules don't encourage the cleaning of camera lenses.
