Yeah that was, "The Cryonic Woman". Could anyone possibly get me a framegrab of Al in the chamber (or tell me how to do this using a Divx file and Media Player).

This is an undocumented feature in Windows, it will work with almost anything on screen.

Have you looked at the Windows documentation? The use of the Enter key is an undocumented feature.

um im pretty sure that if you are viewing Futurama (or any video) in RealPlayer, this technique doesnt work. I have tried it before for a Uni project. I think there are screen capture programs at any downloads site (www.tucows.com) that -can- do this.

But im not 100% about this. It may be different for media player or files such as mpg etc.

In days of yore, one would use a program called "Screen Thief" to grab things that were particularly tricky. Maybe it's been updated in the last seven-odd years?

Actually, trying to take a screen grab of a DivXed avi actually results in the same effect as a screen grab of a DVD playing... You need a specific program that allows you to capture the contents of the visual memory without thinking about the fact that it's encrypted... Personally, I know these programs exist but haven't really needed them, yet! So if you pick one up... Throw a URL my way too... Coz a friend really wants a shot of Bender just after he bends the bars off the Hall of Criminals room in the Head Museum in 1ACV01.

Which is? No idea what you mean. The screen of DIVX AVIs played back in Media Player grabs just fine. If you are in 16 bit mode there might be some problems pasting it to some programs, because 16-bit bitmap is a little of a bent standard. But in truecolor mode you should have no problem whatsoever.

Video memory can't be encrypted - you'll just junk on your screen if it is. The only problem might be that DVD players don't actually output data to the framebuffer, but rather to an overlay surface. Which a) usually uses some funky color format (like YUV) b) is overlooked by screen grabbers because they get data from the framebuffer.

HyperSnap DX from Hyperionics.com works great also for DVDs and games using D3D or OpenGL.
