If it ain't football, it's racing. A badly improvised "breaking news" segment interrupted about 3-4 minutes of the first segment of Futurama here tonight. I don't wanna sound insensitive, but Jesus...couldn't it have waited till a commercial? They didn't say jack schitt but "Dale E. died, racing blah blah Daytona blah blah, Halifax blah blah". Bleh.
It's always something

My affiliate seemed to think so. So much so that they waited until the 10 O'clock news. I feel sorry for the folks who's affiliates thought that was "Breaking News" Considering that it was old news hours before Futurama aired.

*sigh* It's getting to the point where I might as well not even bother watching Futurama...on TV. Better to d/l it. Screw FOX, they don't want me watching my show I won't watch their commercials.
At least I know this was a localized thing, thanks Mike.
They shouldn't be letting 50 year olds drive 180 miles per hour (can someone translate that to metric for the rest of the world, please). I'm surprised more people don't die horrible deaths in Stock Car racing. You can't tell me that exec's at Fox were thinking "Oh, what a horrible tragedy"....but, at the same time weren't thinking " Hey, great ratings!"
I read a report that people were chanting "DEI, DEI, DEI" during his final lap which is the acronym for his company Dale Earnhart Incorporated. Oddly, if you rearrange the last two letters it becomes, DIE, DIE, DIE...pretty eiree, huh? I also heard that his car was totally destroyed but reporters claim that the radio was still on...and you guessed, it was playing Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin. True story...well, some of it.

Well, whether it be bullfights, gladiatorial combat, or stock car racing, people will always love sports held in an arena of death. If someone wants to risk their lives for the entertainment of others, as long as they're aware of the risks, I say go ahead. Humans aren't an endangered species and it's a free country. Sooner or later, one would hope natural selection eliminated the wild risk-taking genetic code and only the sensible of us will remain. I'm not heartless, I feel terrible when someone like Princess Di dies, as she did in a normal everyday car accident when she wasn't even driving. But when someone like this or JFK Jr. voluntarily put their life in their own hands to do something any reasonable person knows is a big risk, they're asking for it.
Here on the east coast, well in east PA anyway, we didn't get any interruption, thank God...
And Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy and Kennedy had a secretary...well, you know how it goes.

They do but their not as famous so they don't get as much recognition when they die. And a severe sudden blow to the head isn't nearly as horrible as say bleeding to death in an alley when you get shot in the gut by a crack head for your wallet. Infact I'd say dying like that would be much better then the way most people will die in old age from pneumonia, heart failure, or cancer complications.
Yea their first Big NASCAR race and now hey Watch for more accidents next week. Just like their Worlds Blankyest Blank shows.
Not really. There were cars with more damage stroking for points at the bottom of the track. It wasn't severely damaged. It just got smacked with a severe G-load when it slammed straight into a brick wall. Way more than the human head can handle. Now Tony Stewart's Home Depot car, that's what you call totally destroyed. And he walked away. And I'd drive straight into a wall too if I had to listen to Led Zeppelin.

I can't see them outright aksing NASCAR "Can we have some more stuff like this???", but I can imagine some round-a-bout discouragement of safety.

Well their was the new Aero package designed to Keep the cars closer packed together that caused over 12 cars to crash out simultaneously in one huge accident that caused a red flag delay while they cleared the massive wreckage. But Im sure that wasn't driven by any intention "to make the race more exciting for the TV viewers."

You think that was bad? The first item of news on Global last Sunday night was Brett Lindros, the lesser brother of hockey player Eric Lindros, being seriously injured in a snowmobile accident. The guy is longer in the NHL because of an injury but a drunken snowmobile accident gets him back into the headlines. Every week there's a drunken snowmobiler falling through the ice or driving into a fencepost.
