I can see a lot of you are bitching about Kathrine Harris. That's cool, you have every right to.
I'm just wondering, does anyone here watch the Daily Show on Comedy Central? Sometimes I want to say "and I thought Futurama was funny" when I watch that show. Recen;ty they've been saying some pretty funny things about Harris and her "present" to George Dubya. If you haven't watched the Daily Show in a while, watch it now. I can barely keep my bladder shut when I watch what they put on now.
Ugh! I'm so sorry! I didn't realize until now that Lewis Black was only on Comedy Central (at least, I've never seen him anywhere else). I LOVE that guy. He's just so pissed off. :)
Don't be. I don't pay money to watch 50 more channels of commercials.
He does Conan every 5 months or so. No real schedule though. Plus he hit's Cleveland's Improv every so often. Buy his white album and T-shirt at rockboss.com
"The new Millenium. It's the same river of CRAP with a TWO in front of it! No flying cars NO FLYING CARS!"-Lewis Black
Your paying money to watch commercials. You can get that for free. That's the point of commercials. Not to mention that's more money for me to spend on things not related to siting in front of my TV. Always a plus.
No, I'm paying money to watch Sunday Night football on ESPN, South Park and Jon Stewart on Nick, Magilla Gorrila and Scooby-Doo on the Cartoon Network, classic Twilight Zone episodes on the Sci-Fi channel, 24-hour Headline news on CNN (with the convenient sports/news/stocks/weather ticker at the bottom of the screen, not to mention the most complete election coverage possible on MSNBC, "How the Channel Tunnel Was Built" and "the History of the Hot Dog" on the Discovery Channel, I get 130 Braves games a year on TBS, instant updates on the Weather Channel, World's Strongest Man. motocross and lumberhjack competitions on ESPN2, and I haven't even mentioned the movie channels, VH-1's Behind the Scenes and Pop-Up Videos, Northern Exposure reruns on A&E, the list is nearly endless.
So if I happen to catch a commercial or two now and then, I can live with that. :-)
It's not a zero sum game. My cable money is budgeted and doesn't affect my expendable income. Now if my financial position was such that I had to choose between cable TV and, say, food, I guess I'd change my mind and settle for 4, 7 and 10.
So what? Now you want to go around in circles for days on this? Do you honestly have time in a week to watch all that?
Hey your choice not mine.
Yea? Take that money out and make it liquid in your budget. That's what (I don't see any premium chanels in your list) $35 a month? I could do a million different Not TV things with $35 bucks. And you can always use another $35 no matter how much money you have. $35 that's about a 1/2 tank of Av-Gas that will get you around 2 hours of flying time, Or It's admission to a museum and lunch, Or normal gas you could just drive around to who the hell cares where, In summer $35 will get you an hour or so on a Jet ski Rental if you happen to be somewhere where you can jet ski or a quad rental if you don't feel like being wet. $35 will get you a box of shells and some pistol range time. These are just a few of the things I can and do, do with about $35 bucks. Sure you could probably do any of those anyway. But it's always an extra $35.

So what? Your comment about commercials *screamed* for clarification.
Not really, I just thought your statement about Cable and commercials was baseless. I figured I'd help you out.
Who said a week? I get options like those I mentioned above every week, all year long.
I have a descrambler box that gives me all the premium channels plus Playboy at night and ESPN's College GameDay on Saturdays. I paid $275 for the box, but that was about 7 years ago and it's paid for itself about 100 times over.
Me too. And for those things, there's another $35 waiting that's only an ATM visit or a Visa card swipe away.
-a bunch of non-TV related things a person can do with $35 snipped-
Once again, if it's my *last* $35, I probably wouldn't spend it on Cable. But since my income at the moment is much higher than my expenses, I can throw $35 at my Cable company each month and *never* have to do without the other things that that money may have purchased.
And for about a buck a day (hell, my morning coffee and smokes cost three times that) I get almost unlimited TV viewing options. I couldn't imagine a better deal than that short of running a line from my neighbor's and stealing the cable signal.
But hey, if your financial situation is such that $35 is too much to spend on a month's worth of entertainment and education, or if you're content to only have a half dozen or so options instead of 58, then I guess you're making the right decision for yourself.
But don't go telling me cable is a waste of money and all I'm paying for is commercials, 'cause that would just be nutty.
(BTW, last night on the Discovery Channel they aired a documentary on how Mt. Rushmore was created/sculpted. Fascinating stuff. )
To who? To me? Why would my own opinion need to be clarified to me?
Yea that's help. Can you even conceive that other people have different opinions then you?
And a year is made up of month's and a month is made up of weeks. The week is the typical span of measure for TV viewing for most people.
Hey good for you. I have a VCR connected to my PC for tuning. But what's the point of me telling you that? And why would you care? And why would you assume I would care what you have?
But you can always use "another" $35. Maby you arn't seeing it. You can always use another $35. No matter how much you have already.
So this proves what? Your smarter then my white trash neighbors? That leaves you at least in the top 98% of the population.
You know If I didn't care, I'd swear you were insinuating that i'm broke.
Well I guess if TV is that important to you that you must have Unlimited viewing options hey that's great for you.
How much TV do you need that 10 or so different channels (depending on where you are and you antena) doesn't satisfy you?
Who the fuck are you to assume I was talking directly to you? Talk about egocentric. Damn.
Obviously not, or I wouldn't have bothered. I meant to everyone else who might also have wondered about your remark equating paying for cable with buying comemrcials. I'll reiterate the initial point. If you think $35 for cable is nothing more than buying commercials, you are the wrongest person I've ever come across on Usenet. (And you're fast becoming the most stubborn.)
Sure, and I can conceive of people actually backing their opinions with something of substance instead of questioning people who disagree and explain why they disagree in great detail. You've done nothing to explain your opinion other than to state that it's yours, and we already knew that.
Actually, as long as we're playing Mr. Pedantic, you should assume the typical span of measure for TV viewing is 30 or 60 minutes, at least that's what the ratings usually measure. And since we're talking about $35 *a month*, there was no reason at all for you to assume I was referring to one week's worth of viewing. And even that is irrelevant as I was merely listing some viewing options, there was never any mention of the time span during which the shows I mentioned were to have been viewed until you wrongfully assumed that list represented exactly one week's worth of viewing. Boy you're reeeeeally stretching now.
You brought up the fact that no premium channels made my list so I clarified. Is it *really* that hard for you to understand this or are you just f*cking around?
Sorry. Wrong. I'm not greedy enough to think that way. I make enough to cover my every expense, with a nice chunk going straight to investments and savings. (I know, I know, who asked me about my financial position? Did I think anyone would care? Why would I assume anyone would care? Save your keystrokes. I'm only explaining how $35 to me is a very small amount to pay for a month's worth of what Cable has to offer.)
No, it merely proves that I'm cognizant of the fact that my physiological needs must be met before I spend any money on entertainment. Fortunately for me, those needs are being met quite nicely and the minor expense for Cable is a non-issue to me financially. (AI know, I know, why would you care about my finances? What do my needs have to do with anything? Why would I think you'd care? Yada yada yada.)
As far as having physiological needs met? You're damned right. In fact, most Americans are in the top 2% of the world's population when it comes to being fed, clothed and sheltered.
If you didn't care? You probably meant "If I did care" as your entire post has taken a decidedly "I don't care" attitude. And I never implied that you couldn't afford cable. In fact, considering your "You can always use another $35. No matter how much you have already." comment above, I'd assume you're more interested in stockpiling your money than in spending it on a convenient and inexpensive entertainment option. But then in a previous post you mentioned a dozen other recreational things you would do with $35 so now I'm wondering how honest you're being here.
Your patronizing attitude is preventing you from arguing the issue properly. If you want to take stock and begin again, I'm game.
Not "how much" but "how many." With 50 more channels, the chances of me finding something watcheable increased dramatically over those of someone with 5 channels (more if they're lucky and have one of those 30 year old 'rabbit ears' antennas.)
Now you're just being an asshole on purpose. You respond to *my* post, commenting on *my* words and I'm supposed to assume you're talking to someone else.
Right.
Ahhhhh, I see what you're doing. You're playing the part of asshole, assuming I'll get fed up and end the discussion. Keep it up, you're almost as entertaining as my cable TV.
Why? Are people using my opinion as their sole research for a cable purchase? Am I some kind of authority on TV reception options?
Im wrong? It's my opinion. Not yours. If I think Cable is a waste of my money, who the hell are you to tell me I'm wrong?
Ok. For me, In my opinion, spending my own money, Cable is not worth it's price. When, for me, It does not offer anything I deem important enough to spend money on that I can't get for free on broadcast TV.
No generally you can ask people "What show's did you watch this week?" and they can answer you with the shows they regularly watch or what not and what ever specials that were on that week. A day or less is to short because that doesn't generally cover all the shows aired in a week, for instance you can't watch space ghost: CTC every day it's on once a week like most current shows.
Why the hell would I care about what's on cable? Are you assuming I'm ignorant to cable shows just because I don't have cable? There's not one thing you listed that, to me, in my opinion, justifies the price of cable.
You didn't list Premiums so I needed a number for the price. And since you don't pay for them their not part of you cable bill anyway.
What greed? Who can Honestly say they wouldn't like another $35 to spend going out doing things?
Here's the kicker. I get Broadcast TV with commercials for free. To me, in my opinion, to pay money to get TV with more channels of commercials is not worth the money. Because There's nothing on cable that Justifies it's price, to me.
Then yes, you are smarter then my white trash neighbors. That's meant to be funny, hahaha you know, comedy?
No, as far as being smarter then my neighbors. You do know what comedy is right? You didn't come to a.t.Futurama just for the Political arguments did you?
Yes it was 1/2 a sentence I walked away from and lost my thread to. it should be. You know if I actually cared, I'd swear you were insinuating that i'm broke. All cleared up?
Yea stockpile. sure ok. I'm stockpiling my money. So how then do I pay for all the stuff I listed as opposed to siting in front of the TV? That stuff kinda adds up. And, for me, in my opinion, These things are much more entertaining then watching TV, for me.
No those are thing's I regularly DO with $35. Although I must admit I don't JetSki much because Im not big on being wet. And walking can get you nowhere just as fast as a Quad can. But they are thing's I spend $35 on.
That's not patronizing. If you need unlimited channel options to enjoy TV then hey, Great, it's your money.
Hur? Rabbit ears are the weaker of the antenna choices. I have friends who get 2 channels with rabbit ears. You need a roof UHF-VHF aerial for real reception.
But in your text you hold the answer. "With 50 more channels, the chances of me finding something watcheable increased dramatically..."
I don't need to Find something watchable. If there's crap on I don't watch TV. Big deal for me. Im usually doing something else while I watch TV anyway, except Futurama, that's the only show that gets my full attention.
You started on my Post to "Fraggler?" You took it upon yourself to correct my opinion of cable. As if I had personally insulted your opinion.
Wrong.
It wouldn't take much. Not much more then Broadcast TV anyway. A TV show's just a TV show.
Because Usenet is a public forum. Other people who have not been exposed to cable might read your opinion and asume wrongfully that it's true. I'd hate for them to miss out on all that cable has to offer just because they read something in a newsgroup. Call it a civic duty.
And I can say the moon is made of cheese and it's my opinion, not yours. But it would also indicate that I'm grossly misinformed so if it *is* in fact my opinion, I'd be better off keeping it to myself and not posting it to a public forum.
I'm not calling you wrong because you think cable is a waste of money, I'm calling you wrong because you think purchasing cable amounts to nothing more than purchasing advertising.
Now we're finally getting somewhere. But only if you at least recognize that when you began this little diatribe of yours against cable, your focus was not on whether or not it offered you enough to be worth the cost, but on it being nothing but advertising. That was the bullshit comment I called you on.
I've snipped the rest of your non-responses for the sake of brevity.
Anyone Stupid enough to blindly use my opinion as their own doesn't deserve things like cable or air.
Yes but we can scientifically prove that the moon is in fact made of Basalts, and Reigolith and not Gouda and Cheddar. That's what makes your opinion wrong. I would like to see you scientifically Disprove my opinion on cable.
Well you are. Sure your getting shows but with those shows comes commercials that your paying to see. It's called Spin.
My little diatribe? All I said was I don't pay money to watch commercials. It could have ended right there, but you had to contest my opinion to justify your cable purchase. And most cable is advertising. I've been at friends houses surfing channels while I wait for them to do something. And I've run into streaks of 30-40 channels all in commercials all at the same time. ANd their commercial breaks are longer then broadcast TV too. So you didn't call me on anything.
What a convenient way of avoiding having to answer to things you know are right. I'll have to remember that little trick,.. Oh no wait I'm not an Jackass.
See all those things they listed? Those are programs, not commercials. Do you suppose yet that maybe paying for cable TV is somehow something *more* than just purchasing advertisements?
Well, at least I got you to admit that.
Perhaps this thread hasn't been a 100% waste of my time.
Most? As in over 50%? Sorry, you blew this one too.
There's a fine line between a gross exaggeration and a lie. Some would say they're one and the same.
You see all these listings? Their all full of commercials. Commercials your paying for. There's no scientific proof for this one. So no real Right or Wrong.
"...but with those shows comes commercials that your paying to see. It's called Spin." Not Misquoting. Save that for Movie Previews.
Sorry Most. If you want proof I sugest you do some tests for your self.
Pick 4 random Non PBS, Non Movie cable stations over 4 days and keep track of all the commercial time built up by those stations. And when the 4 stations are in commercials simultaneously Then compare it to 4 Broadcast stations. You'll find there's more then a minor difference between the two numbers.
"I believe every commercial should be counted. To hear the voice and will of the corporations..."
Sorry Bucko but I have a witness to that little Commercialthon.
I feel obligated to inform you that when the depth of quoting reaches the point where the quote indicators wrap, I'll have to shoot a tofu-eating lion. Thank you for your cooperation.
No shooting necessary. I'm killfiling this thread. Shoulda known from his other contributions to the group that the very existence of the universe seems to depend on Mike being right 100% of the time, and he's simply doing what he can to keep the planets in their orbits. I never should have tried to disrupt such a worthy endeavor.
So you'll hear nothing more from me on the subject. In fact as far as this thread is concerned, according to calculations, you should see approximately one more post from Mike hailing triumphant and then silence.
Anyway, gotta go. The Miami Heat/Washington Wizards game comes on in less than an hour (on cable) and I've got to get moving if I'm going to make it to the party on time. See'ya. :-)
Since you obviously want me to, I'll waste the time required to remark on the rest of the crap you spewed at me.
Copied from previous post:
But why would you ask them that? Originally you said I'm paying money to watch commercials. I countered with a decent list of things *other than commercials* that I watch. You then responded with "Do you honestly have time in a week to watch all that?" I'm not sure where you got this arbitrary time frame from, certainly not from anything I posted.
Oh, most *current* shows. Since you don't have cable, I'll forgive you your ignorance. As an example, I can watch M*A*S*H 10 times a week if I want to.
This must be your favorite way of starting a sentence. "What a convenient way of avoiding having to answer to things you know are right. I'll have to remember that little trick,.. Oh no wait I'm not an Jackass."
You mentioned you didn't see any premiums on my list so I assumed that required further clarification or you wouldn't have bothered to mention it. If I had known you would respond with your typical "Why would I care?" bullshit, I wouldn't have mentioned my descrambler. Really.
I can. Right now, an extra $35 would make no difference *whatsoever* in my life. it would just be 35 more dollars sitting in a savings account or a CD. I'm not going to comment on your financial situation, but if you see $35 as more that just a piddly monthy bill, then maybe you already have. Jeez, I blew $120 on a meal for two just last night. I suppose that was a waste too, as there are *so* many other things I could have spent that money on. Like Jet Skiing.
There you go again. "More channels of commercials." Your repeated attempt to portray cable TV as nothing but televised advertising is laughable, especially since many millions of cable subscribers know you're wrong. Shame they aren't all following this thread.
But why should you care, right?
This is about the only legitimate comment you've made since this thread began. Thank you. Perhaps if you'd have worded you initial response better, it never would have gotten this long.
Sure, because your tone throughout this thread has been soooo jovial that this *had* to be a joke, right? Well, if it was meant to be a joke, it was a supremely crappy attempt.
Enough backtracking, you know damned well this was no joke.
Maybe someday FOX will actually air another Futurama episode, then I'll have something on topic to talk about. (And please let's not conveniently forget that you goaded me into this response.)
I was aware of your intent from the start, there was nothing to clear up.
You spend what you save by not paying for cable. Maybe I'm just fortunate in that I can afford everything you've mentioned AND cable.
I know, why would you care about my finances?
As long as you're operating on the assumption that you can EITHER do all those things you listed OR pay for cable, we're not going to get anywhere.
BTW, how many of those things you mentioned can you do at 1:00 in the morning? Purchase flying time? Rent a quad? Visit a museum? My 58 channels don't close down at the end of the business day.
Is this the part where I ask "Why would I care whether you like being wet or not?"
Of course it is. the "Hey, that's great for you" part clinched it.
Again.
I wouldn't know. It's been 20 years since I had to give any thought to a TV antenna. Cable solved that problem.
So I have to climb up on my roof for better reception?? So instead of spending a few bucks for 58 channels I should risk breaking my neck for 5 or 6? Hey, you wanna write a letter to my apartment association? They don't allow roof antennas.
Because you have all that Jet Skiing and quadrunning and museum visiting to do. Check.
Me too. Right now I'm typing AND watching live coverage of the hearing in Tallahassee on MSNBC. I suppose if non-cable people are interested in this hearing they can always wait and hope their local news makes mention of it (although there's no way in hell their coverage could be as comprehensive as the cable news stations' coverage, we both know that.)
Did I?
Let's have a look.
Neither do I.
I pay money for 50 channels of entertainment and educational programming.
And Lewis Black. :-)
Nope, that wasn't a correction. I was merely stating my own opinion. And threw in a joke to boot (See, that little smiley can make all the difference in the world when it comes to discerning whether the poster meant the comment humorously or not. You might want to make a note of that.) In fact, Fraggler?'s initial post was meant to be humorous; mock sympathy for someone who doesn't get to watch a comedian he likes because he doesn't get that channel. You then got defensive before I ever entered the thread. Now I'm thinking you'd love nothing more than cable TV but for some reason you can't have it.
You're the one who started the argument by saying people who buy cable are only paying to watch commercials. (Ever heard of "The Fox and the Grapes"?) That's when I responded with the list of OTHER things besides commercials that can be viewed on cable (along with another comment appended with a smiley to indicate that I was still trying to add levity) and that's when you got defensive with me as well. Fraggler was the smart one. If I had known how you were to respond, I never would have started.
Ya got me there.
I would take issue with this ridiculous comment, but it would only serve to extend the thread unnecessarily.
A TV show's just a TV show.
So "Homeboys from Outer Space" is just as good as "The Sopranos."
I'll keep that in mind.
Now if you'll excuse me, "Creature From the Black Lagoon" is about to start on the American Movie Classics network and I don't want to miss the beginning.
And I was content to just consider you a Jackass, Asshole.
Why ask that? Because your taking interest in your friends life's and seeing it they saw anything you did so you can discuss it. You know, for conversation?
I've learned that the 5-7 times a week it's re-run on Broadcast TV is usually just about enough.
"...about what's on cable? Are you assuming I'm ignorant to cable shows just because I don't have cable? There's not one thing you listed that, to me, in my opinion, justifies the price of cable."
I'd say that's a viable response that conveys my opinion quite well.
As I said, I just needed a number for comparison. $35 is about standard cable fare. If you add Premiums then the price goes up. Since you had none listed then the $35 price is roughly right depending on your location and availability of competition. And considering your using a descrambler your not paying the premium anyway.
Your not getting it. $35 in hand is much more valuable then $35 a month in TV options, when TV is my last option for entertainment.
And I blew $1200 in Flight Costs this month alone. What you want a pissing contest now?
*Duh DuDu Duh Jetski!*
Maybe your dense, maybe your brain dead. But going out to dinner IS SOMETHING OTHER THEN WATCHING TV!! It just didn't make my list because it usualy costs more then a month of cable.
Who the hell are you? Duke Cabel-O. Defending the honor and respect of cable television from all who disgrace it's name?
Perhaps you don't get it, But TV shows are there for the commercials. Without the commercials who pays for the TV shows, and without the TV shows who watched the commercials.
If you hadn't, and just passed over my responce to 'Fraggler?' we wouldn't be doing this now would we?
Oh praise from Dave. My life is complete now.
Or perhaps if you didn't need to justify your paying for cable to yourself we wouldn't be here at all.
What you don't like a little levity? Your life so bitter that your actually taking this argument seriously?
And your some kind of expert?
No I know damned well it was. Lighten up. This isn't the SALT 2 treaty negotiations.
Maybe, all I know is "War is the H-word" was Hilarious last week and I can't wait for "The Cryonic Woman" tomorrow.
Heheh. Cute. This was the weakest reply I've ever seen from you. Are you trying to be funny?
I always spend. You only live once jocko. Why save for tomorrow what you can enjoy today?
Maybe. But it's not as if cable costs so much. I just would rather spend the money elsewhere.
And we keep coming back to that. This time I didn't even have to say it. Maybe next time you won't bring it up at all.
No You can Do those things and not have time to waste siting in front of the TV long enough for cables vast continuum of channels to affect your viewing. But if your either A) Constantly watching TV, or B) like to throw money around for unnecessary conveniences that you wont use often. Hey good for you.
Yea, 24hour avalability to my clubs 27 aircraft. Aviation never sleeps.
Yea Im really fiending for stuff to do 1/2 way through Conan O'Brien, Or when I'm out with my friends on the weekend.
It could be. When you have learned enough grasshopper you will know without asking questions.
Honestly, If it's what butter's your toast that's great. For you. Your seeing sarcasm where there is none.
It is. It's not my money is it? I shouldn't have any final say as to how you spend it should I? If that's what you want to do with it who am I to argue your choice?
Great, Fantastic, That was it's original point wasn't it? Or is your cable so stuffed with channels that you get ghosts and cross images bouncing across the bandwidth like most people's are now days?
No you just install it right the first time.
So then your forced into cable, or trying to pick up TV through a foot of concrete with pathetic little aerials. Now I see where your justification problem comes from. By not having a high power antenna network, or allowing individual roof aerials. Their leaving you with no alternative but cable. I'll grant you in that kind of B.S. Predicament I'd bite the bullet and pay for it to. But I'd bitch at every tenant meeting. And utter curses every time I write the check.
Uh.. Yea..? Why what's your plan for today? TV followed by TV followed by TV? I don't know where you live but over here it's a beautiful Saturday. I don't intend to waste it on TV.
You'd rather watch MSNBC then go out and do thing's? Ok, National news is important but your own life is just a touch more important. That's my Opinion anyway.
Seems a bit confrontational to me.
And you said my joke was bad?:)
Man do I need to put a fucking ":)" after every damn thing I type?:)
I guess so, otherwise you take it as defensive.:)
Not sarcastic at all. When ever you see this ":)" it's one hundred percent viable. I never use them as sarcasm.
Uh. Ok you think that. I'm going to go down to the Airport. I have some living to do. :)
You started by having to have a defensive comeback to my statement.
It's only Sour Grapes if you want and can't have something then rationalize out a reason why you don't want it.
I have sat down. And thoroughly considered if I would get my money's worth from Cable many times. (About every other mail solicitation) And I always come back to that it would be spending money for commercials. No mater what "great" shows there are I can't justify it. I don't need it that badly.
Yea 'Fraggler?' took it for what it was and moved on.
If only you had known. Well now ya do.
What? That show was crap with a capital "Guh" But it was still lightheartedly goofy. As for "the sopranos" If I wanted to watch it I would buy the forthcoming DVD's That way I get only what I want.
Now If you'll excuse me I'm off to meet my Instructor at the airport for 2 hours of Simulated IFR training. Enjoy your movie.:)
I just hope you guys know how entertaining this argument is to everyone else. I don't know why, but it's just funny.

In post: (On Thursday) Dave said: "Ahhhhh, I see what you're doing. You're playing the part of asshole,..."
Let's get one thing straight. I don't exist to you any more. NEVER respond to another of my posts again EVER. Your input is un-welcome by me. Any reply's to my post's by you will result in a copy of this message in your mail box from now on. Are we clear on that?
*playing the part* Subtle difference. You missed it.
So you don't really wanna meet by the bike racks after school and kick my ass?
