Can anybody tell me what's up with the cartoon clips in the opening that are shown on the giant screen before the ship crashes into it? Are they of any significance?

They are merely to the opening of Futurama what The Simpsons converging on the couch (or trying to) is to *their* show. Similarly, the messages that appear below Futurama's title are to this show what Bart's blackboard scribblings are to The Simpsons.

Usually really old cartoons, but they've thrown in the Simpsons once that I know of...
