Emmy Nominations

Surprise - although The Simpsons and Futurama were both nominated for Animated Program (Less than One Hour) (for "The Way We Weren't" and "The Sting", respectively - Futurama is eligible because the episode first aired after May 31, 2003), Fox's other prime-time cartoon, King of the Hill, got beat out by Samurai Jack ("The Birth of Evil"), South Park ("Christmas in Canada"), and SpongeBob SquarePants ("SpongeBob B.C.").

(The "one hour or longer" nominees, both of which can win as this is an "area" category (it's also possible to have no winner) are "The Powerpuff Girls: 'Twas the Fight Before Christmas" and the complete "Star Wars: Clone Wars" series, which, for whatever reason, is being treated as one episode rather than 25.)

The Simpsons has two other nominations: Alf Clausen, for Music Composition (Dramatic Underscore) for a Series (for "Treehouse of Horror XIV") Alf Clausen and Dana Gould, for Music and Lyrics (i.e. Original Song) (for "Vote for a Winner" from "The President Wore Pearls"). Futurama got a second nomination: Ken Keeler, for Music and Lyrics (for "I Want My Hands Back" from "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings").

These awards will be given out on September 12. Also, the Voiceover and Individual Animation Achievement awards, which don't have nominations (each entry is judged on its own merits), will have their winners announced sometime in August.

King of the Hill wasn't actually eligible for best Animated Show this year, because the producers reportedly entered it in the regular comedy-show categories, trying to get the show a writing nomination. It didn't work this year, but the article said that the producers were primarily aiming to get a nomination next year, when some of the old favorites would be gone. (Indeed three of this year's sitcom writing nominees are for shows that are no longer on the air, so it's not inconceivable that KotH could get a writing nomination next year, though it hasn't a hope in hell of cracking the main comedy category.)

I'm thrilled. "The Sting" was far too good to go un-noticed.

That South Park was good, but not the best of their season. The thing that most stood out about it, if I recall, was the end, which prominently features Saddam, with references to how he was captured in Iraq. The reason that stood out is that happened on a Sunday, and that episode aired three days later, on Wednesday, showing how fast they can make significant changes. Compare to The Simpsons, which usually takes months to reference that kind of event.

I think they say in one of the interviews on the SP web site that they can go from a script change to completed animation in something like 30 minutes.

I'd say the SP that should have been nominated is the one where Cartman pretended to be a robot. Or maybe the parody of "You Got Served". That would be particularly funny because that movie is currently the 4th worst movie of all time, according to the votes at IMDB. It would be hilarious for a parody of it to be nominated or win an Emmy.

"The Sting" was a great episode, but I thought "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" was better.

Sacrilege! at least we can agree they're both better than the why of fry.

I love the commentary for That's Lobstertainment -- someone says "so, for some reason, the people on the newsgroup hated this episode", and then everyone else is like "what? this is a great episode" and then for the whole rest of the show, they're trying to defend it.

Hey, when you do find your .sig, could you make sure that it's at most five lines, and more importantly, preceded with "-- " (that's dash-dash-space), which is the standard sig indicator? (It's nicer for people who reply to you, because our newsreaders can detect that it's a sig and not quote it.)

=v= I don't agree that "they're trying to defend it." Someone (David X. Cohen? I forget who, exactly) mentioned one guy who would just keep slamming this episode over and over, so he finally sent the guy email and the guy totally backpedaled.

What about Jurassic Bark? I loved that episode. It has always lasted with me when I think about Futurama. The writer was brilliant. Life isn't always about the "comedy" That's my two blurns worth anyway.

And of course I have two dogs.....

Personally, I think that the SP episode that got nominated should have been "Good Times With Weapons". That was hands down one of the funniest moments of the season, thanks to a "Calvin and Hobbes"-like plotline in which the boys imagine themselves as anime-style ninjas (complete with Japanese theme music and "previously on..." segment) after buying some weapons at a county fair.
