1ACV13: Slurm, Baby Slurm

Review by Haynes Lee

SYPNOSIS: Fry's thirst for "Slurm," a popular spft drink, garners him a tour of the factory after he wins a contest. But, he has a hard time swallowing the secret of the beverage's secret ingredient, which he accidently stumbles upon.

DYN: - Bender's internal thermoneter is an oven thermoneter? - Slurm queen looks like a termite queen? - Pamela Anderson is credited as "Dixie" in the ending credits? (many cartoons such as The Simpsons and KOTH only list the names of the voice actors and guests but not who voices whom)

GOOFS: - milk comes from a cow's udder and honey comes from a honeycomb

CULTURAL REFERENCES: - Soylent Green: (now we know what hey do with contents of the suicide booths. - Star Trek TOS: 3D game board. - Spuds McKenzie: beer mascot - Burn, Baby Burn: disco song having nothing to do with this episode.

COKELORE ALERT:

Slurm is the universe's most addictive soft drink. T. Coca-Cola used to contain cocaine. T. ... but people today get addicted the the caffeine. See <http://snopes.simplenet.com/cokelore/cocaine.htm>

Slurm contaminated by Leela will be marketed as New Slurm as a greater plan to market the original product. F. The New Coke fiasco was actually a clever marketing ploy. See <http://snopes.simplenet.com/cokelore/newcoke.htm>

Right on the first, but wrong on the second. How does it get from the flowers to the honeycomb? The bee swallows it, and regurgitates it into a cell in the comb (along with some yummy enzymes from its stomach). So the queen was still wrong -- it's bee barf, not bee poop.

And *tons* of writing at the end of the Slurm commercial. Enough for anyone who's trying to figure out the alien alphabet to have a field day. Also, Zoidberg's eye chart had many of the same characters, but unless it's the Snellen chart, there's no rhyme or reason to the letters in the chart.

Here's a neat DYK:

On the T-shirt Dr. Zoidberg was wearing in the gift shop, the word "Slurm" was written in Hebrew.

More fuel for the "He's Jewish despite the fact that he's shellfish and thus non-kosher" faction, of which I count myself as a member.

And the 'authorities' that Leela called were the "Bureau of Soft Drinks, Tobacco and Firearms".

One more DYK. When he was being x-rayed, we saw that Bender has a 6502 processor and mechanical gears. Has that ever come up before?

I'm not familiar with TOS, but it looked an awful lot like futuristic Scrabble. And I think there were four boards.

Anoyther possible cultural reference. "The Slurmmaster", who inspects the Slurm for quality seems a lot like "The Brewmaster" that Budweiser likes to show in their commercials.

How could you miss the grandest cultural reference of them all. The Willy Wonka parody was very funny. Especially the Grunka Lunkas.

And it's quite possible that the "Party on, Slurmy" and "Party on, contest winners" bit at the end was a reference to "Bill and Ted's Excellant Adventure", where the title characters offer a similar farewall to "Rufus" (George Carlin).

I was wondering if anyone noticed this. For those who don't know, the M6502 is the processor used in the original Nintendo.

In the Star Trek series, chess is shown in the future as a regular chess board except that it has 4 different "levels", like the scrabble game did.

I think he can be Jewish and not Kosher. People, I'm sure, are not Kosher - at least when considered as a food product.

DaveDweeb

Never thought about it that way. You're right, human flesh is not kosher.

But that doesn't make the Doctor's Judaism any less ironic.

I've heard the cloven hoofs thing, but explain please

Kosher creatures can't have cloven hooves or chew cud, I think. Of course, people aren't kosher. Remember Thou Shall Not Kill?

That he's shellfish could be a reason FOR him to be Jewish. After all, wouldn't you prefer a religion that says it's wrong to eat someone like you, over one that says it's okay?

But, as others have pointed out, human flesh is just as non-Kosher as shellfish.

I guess it was more an example of surface irony that just didn't hold up under close scrutiny.

If he's Jewish, I'd say it's because he's shellfish, not in spite of it. Imagine -- a religion that says you're a protected species, and that no one can harvest you for food. No wonder Zoidberg signed up.
