TV GUIDE: The gang throws Farnsworth a surprise party for his 150th birthday, but the professor is disappointed at the course his life has taken, so he re-animates his clone, a 12 year-old boy, to relive his youth.

OPENING GAG: Coming soon to an illegal DVD

REVIEW: I really like this episode but why did we have to wait so long for Cubert to be introduced? Great special effects in the battle sequence.

GRADE: \sqrt A~-

DYN: - "successor to the professor" phrase is really catchy? - Bender rolling up his metal sleeves?

TEMPORAL DISCONTINUITY: If Professor Farnsworth is able to clone himself, why is he using expendable Planet Express employees as potential organ donors?

META REFERENCE: Cubert wanting to be something useful like a teacher's aide or science-fiction comedy cartoon writer. Before Futurama, there hasn't been any steady work in this field since the Jetsons last aired 37 years ago.

CUBERT WHO?

Cubert has been announced over a year ago. In the February/1999 Wired magazine Matt Groening said Cubert "will anticipate fan complaints about the show's inconsistencies, and then will address them within the show."

An article in May/1999 Spin magazine revealed that he is a clone of Hubert and sounds like the Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons.

A recent interview in Comics Scene 2000 Billy West says the voice of Hubert is based on a distant old uncle. One can presume Cubert is a young Billy West.

Geographically and historically Cubert is a small parish in Cornwall named after its patron, Saint Cubertus. Some descendants from that area have the last name Cubert. http://www.cfhs.demon.co.uk/Society/cubert.html

Other inspirations for Cubert: - early 1980s video game Q*Bert. - ...or its C64 clone `Cubert'. - name of one of Cletus' kids in "The Twisted World of Marge Simpson". - Dilbert?!

CUBERT LINES (some of inconsistencies Cubert already pointed out): - Can't go faster than the speed of light: This plagues most of the sci-fi genre. The closest I've seen to addressed this is when the mortal Q in an ST:TNG episode said that the only way to divert an asteroid was to change the gravitational constant of the universe. - Smelloscope can't work through the vacuum of space: This was a hotly debated topic in alt.tv.futurama when 1ACV08 first aired last year.

Sorry, I'm just a video game fanatic since I was able to percieve the world around me. lets say around 2.

Actually, the people in drawers looked more like a Matrix reference, especially since they were all hooked into a virtual world that seemed like the real world.

Although the chase through the moving obstacles looked like it was from the Return of the Jedi, and the just squeezing through the closing hatch might be a reference to Independence day(I can't be the only one who saw that and imagined Jeff Goldblum saying "Must go faster!".)

Here's another DYN: Apparently Dr. Zoidberg is a failed comedian (His "It's like Evening at the Improv all over again..." remark when nobody laughed at his jokes)

Cubert is obviously voiced by Tress Macneille. The voice is very similar to the superintelligent monkey she voiced, coincidentally in the only other Futurama ep featuring a trip to Mars University, as well as other child voices of hers from The Simpsons, such as the Shelbyville arch-enemy to Bart. "Look at the weak little baby. You're stupid, you stupid weak baby!"
