yes, it's a tough watch. i've seen it twice. you know, when they show fry and nibbler's shadows when fry falls backwards, i always thought they'd work in something where he gets seymour back, but they never did. i can't for the life of me believe they ended that episode so sadly.

I'm looking forward to the commentary when they release it on DVD... And I hadn't noticed the nibbler shadow until I listened to the commentary on the DVD talking about it in another ep. Only there for a couple seconds.

I thought "Luck of the Fryrish" was the saddest episode till I saw "Jurrasic Bark". After seeing amazing episodes like those you have to wonder what FOX was smoking when they pulled the plug.

We don't see her die (like Seymour), but when they get back to their present time; Spock tells McCoy he can stop looking at him. He's back to normal and Zarabeth died 5,000 years ago... and was dead and buried long ago.

In one of the first season episodes, if I'm not mistaken. But then again, it could be argued that Hermes only used the "banned words" because he knew no one would hear, and he knew that Fry wouldn't understand otherwise.

It's from Season 2, "Brannigan Begin Again" (or, as the subtitler has it, "Brannigan Begins Again" - had he never heard of Michael Finnegan?). It's just before they deliver the Ceremonial Oversized Scissors to the new DOOP headquarters, which Brannigan blows up.

I'm normally rubbish with seasons/ episode titles - but by a stroke of luck, I just watched this episode five minutes ago! :o)

You don't remember Mariette Hartley taking off her Polar Bear coat in the cave and all she had on was some skimply leather?!? (She even made a Vulcan take notice.)

(Btw, they don't end with a cheesy shot with cheesy converstaion on the Bridge. As a matter of fact, somebody said there are no shots of the Bridge or other ST characters other than Kirk, Spock and McCoy in the ep.)

Classic Trek did tragic stories best, but Futurama came close:

"All Our Yesterdays" Kirk, McCoy and Spock enter a dying planet's library/time-machine; Kirk is in a Salem witchhunt-type society, McCoy and Spock are in an Ice Age. Marriete Hartley seduces Spock. Our heroes return before the planet is destroyed by a supernova. The last line Spock says is that "she's dead and buried" but it bugs me that of course no one is left with her to do the job, unless he's referring to their illegitmate son documented in a Trek novel.

"City on the Edge of Forever" McCoy overdoses on a drug and goes nuts, enters a time-travel machine and disrupts history, causing the Enterprise to cease to exist. Kirk and Spock follow him to Joan Collin's halfway house during the Great Depression and she gets run over by a car (obviously traffic lights weren't invented yet). Kirk has a perfect last line "Let's get the hell out of here."

Not tragic but creepiest episode - the one where Nurse Chapel's ex boyfriend makes a robot copy of Kirk.

I've never read a Trek novel, but I'm going to get that one. (Yesterday's Son)... In the TV ep, I wondered if they were implying that Spock and Zarabeth are "intimate". Possibly, the most subtle love scene ever...

Speaking of tragic, I always felt bad for Lazarus in that ep in which he was trapped in time with his evil double... (Final lines, Kirk: "but what of Lazarus, what of Lazarus...)

Anyway, I still feel Jurassic Bark is the saddest episode ever.

I forgot about that. Pretty "edgy" for the mid-60s broadcast TV. (Doesn't Fry say that in an episode?)
