I'm sure that the Futurama team couldn't have known that the show was to be cancelled when that episode was completed over 2 years ago, but they probably thought a renewal was unlikely, based on that last line.

According to many articles and interviews. They knew renewal was rather unlikely when this episode was started. They wanted it to be final yet open ended enough should a miracle happen and FOX had just forgotten to renew their contract when they did everyone else's.

Hope? I hope the robot devil finally collects from Fox. Of course there has to be some diabolical force at work here. Every single show that I liked on Fox besides the Simpsons has gotten the axe. As a matter of a fact aside from Discovery, the History Channel, the local news, and the outdoor shows about every show I liked was on Fox.
