Zoidberg!

I'm starting to like Dr. Zoidberg. I love what he said to Fry about the pirate flag possibly being poisonous, his Curly noises, and the way he was sucking (kissing?) the professor's head after he sprayed himself with the fish pheromones ("I am so into you"). In the episode where Bender flushed Nibbler down the toilet, Benders said "I don't see anyone kissing my ass", and Zoidberg gets up and says something like "alright, I'm coming".

That was seriously f-ed up!

Actually, I think some of the writers are having a lot of fun and some haven't quite figured out what to do with him yet. Sometimes they do the "I'm a fish who doesn't understand mammals" thing, which works really well, but sometimes that turns into "I don't understand social skills, either, so I'm a broke, friendless loser" thing, which doesn't work so well for me. (Just compare the "Deep South" episode with the "...Groove Back" episode, for example.) I could deal with him being a character I just don't like, but it's unsettling to have him have such a different personality from one episode to the next like that. I figure it'll all settle out soon, though.

I don't think those are different personalities. Those aspects of him don't conflict at all. I find the human/fish stuff is good for cheap gags, but his social difficulties are what make him a more interesting, complex character and provide deeper, more resonant humor. I didn't think much of the character at all until the wonderful episode where Zoidberg tries to go back to his home planet to mate. One of the flat-out funniest scenes they've ever written for him is the one from I think the Valentine's Day episode...I don't remember it exactly, but...

Fry: Then why doesn't Dr. Zoidberg have a girlfriend? Bender: It's because he's broke and a loser. [Zoidberg raises hand to speak] Leela: For your information, it's because he's hideous. [Zoidberg lowers head in sadness]

Actually the only conflict I see the writers have with him is they're not sure if his job as a doctor means he's highly paid (A doctor, honey!), or whether the demand for lobster doctors is so weak that he's making sub-minimum wage...
