I was 11 years old when Star Trek aired new, and I've been a fan ever since.
This was the funniest thing I've seen in some time. They did do some parody, but it was done gently, the same way Galaxy Quest did.
And I imagine it felt pretty good to some of the ST cast to get some comments off their chests.
This will undoubtably be one of my favorite episodes.

David A. Goodman, although the whole Futurama writing staff deserves the credit. Even though each show has a "written by" person, the writing team all have a great deal of influence on what actually makes it into a script.

I'm not really up on the behind the scenes story of star trek, and I was wondering if the cast really do hate doohan (scotty) like that. I know he wouldn't participate in the episode and that's why they had to put welshy instead, and they did refer to doohan as "the enemy".... What's up with that?

I listened to Shatner's book "Star Trek Memories" on audiobook and recall the Doohan bit -- apparently, at least at the time the book was written, Doohan still hadn't talked to Shatner. He's been angry with him forever, mainly because of Shatner's big influence on the show (i.e., Shatner would suggest they take out some lines, further reducing the minor character's roles -- and he did it so carelessly). Takei, Koenig, and Nichols were also plenty pissed with him, and were going to get together to write a nasty book about their experiences on Trek, but Shatner talked it out with them and now they're all friends (or at least on speaking terms).
I couldn't believe how they included so many little-known details in this Futurama episode. For example, when Melvar says Koenig and Takei would have to share the fan script, it's a reference to their sharing of payroll back in the first and second seasons (or something like that -- I can't recall the details exactly). The gist of it was that Desilu (the producers of Trek) didn't have it in budget to have both Chekhov and Sulu always on the same show, so there were times when one character's lines had to be rewritten for the other.
For fans of the original series, this episode was just a lovely tribute. Wasn't Bender's line quaint, the one where he says (paraphrased), "Another great sci-fi show ended before its time!" Hear, hear. It's a shame that this might very well be the last episode of Futurama.

I attended Magnum Opus Con in Columbus GA, many years ago, when Doohan was a guest. He stood on stage and bitched about Shatner for the entire hour.
But since then, Shatner's been made aware of the other cast member's problems with him, and they've made up.
The reason he wasn't there is probably poor health. He attended DragonCon last year, and since my wife and I run the Handicap Access department, we supplied him with a motorized scooter. He really didn't look very good, but gamely made his events.
I was surprised when DeForest Kelly died first; I'd always thought Doohan would, since he's had a couple of heart attacks.
Speaking of Kelly, I thought it a nice, subtle memorial to have his character there, but him not say anything.
