REVIEW: A good episode that revealed a little more about the characters. The repeated brainslug jokes were also good.

GRADE: B+-

Bender shows his braun when he enters the Ultimate Robot Fighting League. Rich Little guest stars as AHIAJ

FFF - movie: It Came from the Planet Earth - Movie rating: M-14: Not suitable for aliens from the planet M-14 - RobotMania XXVII (Robotmania 27) - robot holding sign "Bender 3:16" at fight - the NO in NO GAMBLING on the RobotMania billboard was in quotes

REVELATIONS: - Bender was made by Mom's Friendly Robot Factory in Mexico - Leela learned to fight in orphanerium because she was alwyas picked on - the winner from last week's Miss Galaxy Pagaent has returned to her home planet Paramacium to boost the morale of the troops who are assembling to wipe out planet Earth [shudder]

WWF REFERENCES: WWF and other wrestling federations use stereotypical "heels". During the Iran crises it was the Iron Sheik. There was also Ted "The Million Dollar Man" DiBiase who threw alot of money around and Irving R. Shyster the tax collector for the I.R.S. The effeminate Genderbender reminds me of the late Adorable Adrian Adonis who wore pink trunks and carried flowers.

You missed one. In the movie theater, what was obviously Crow T. Robot from Mystery Science Theater 3000 says "Shhh. No talking during the movie." I spotted him right off when they did it, but some others in the group here say they also saw Tom Servo and Joel (though it could've been Mike. How can you really tell in the dark?). I loved the reference.

When I saw Bender in the pink dress and the blonde wig I immediately thought of "Georgous George," a wrestler from the 1950s who adopted an exquisite persona that could really get the crowds roaring. Ca. 1954, at the Sportatorium in Shreveport, Louisiana, I saw the following:

Beefy chap, wearing pink trunks and a pink robe, who was escorted into the ring by a manservant decked out like Jeeves.

Jeeves would climb through the ropes first and freshen the air in George's corner with a little atomizer bottle, then hold the ropes for George, who would ignore the catcalls of the crowd. George would doff his robe and strut about, working the crowd up, until the ref would come over to inspect George's tightly marcelled golden locks. A dispute would ensue, with the ref insisting that George remove the bobby pins from his hair before the match began.

George would comply, sulking a bit, and would discard the bobby pins by disdainfully flicking them into the crowd.

Years later I read somewhere that George was, in fact, a physician or maybe a psychiatrist who figured that people needed a "safe" target at which to direct their rage, so went on the pro wrestling circuit for a spell as a sort of experiment. That would have been no loonier than what we see on the WWF these days.

When I saw it, I might not have been paying too much attention, but it sounded like she said she always got picked on, and learning to fight was her only outlet. A joke, you see...

Plus the entire mid-1900s news reel.

What was that from in the Simpsons? I thought it was just " let's all go to the lobby", an acnowledgement of the most annoying pre-movie sales reels ever.

Is it possible it's just another play on ass hole?

They did it on Futurama because in "real" pro wrestling, they hold up signs which say "Austin 3:16." This in itself is a parody of religious nuts who go to anything they feel is antireligious and hold up signs reading "John 3:16" which is the passage in the bible which many feel sums up its message best:

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Actually, it's a parody of just one religious nut who goes to anything with a TV camera and holds up a sign reading "John 3:16". Rollen "Rock'n'Rollen" Stewart. His mission: to get on national TV as often as possible to better spread the word of the Lord. That the whole "John 3:16" thing is percieved as the work of lots of religious nuts as opposed to just one lone kook is a testament to how good he was at his job.

One reference that seems to have escaped notice so far (well, it is little more than 24 hours since the broadcast) is the opening of the newsreel. In the 1930s, Universal Pictures films opened with an animated logo of a biplane circling a sparkling globe emblazoned with the company name. Makes sense that "Futurama" (another 1930s reference) would upgrade the globe to a galaxy.

See for yourself. Rent a video issued during Universal's recent 75th anniversary year and you'll see a montage of their various openings over the decades.
