this year at comic con, matt groening answered a few questions regarding futurama. here are two things i thought interesting.
1. matt groening is cool with VCD's and episodes released on the net. as long as they arent being sold. fox on the other hand....
2. its been confirmed, in "Space Pilot 3000", that is indeed the shadow of nibbler, and nibbler is responsible for sending fry to the future (thats why in "Anthology of Interest" nibbler doesnt appear again - fry never made it to the future).
in "Space Pilot 3000" at approximately 1:53 into the show. it is shown on the left-hand side of the screen as fry falls back off his chair into the cryogenic freezer.
Was this from the big Futurama panel on Saturday? 'Cause I don't remember that part. (I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't remember anyone mentioning that.). He did however, say that "secret groundwork" has been set up for some longer, ongoing storylines in the future. Is that what you mean? Because that'd really be using your ass! Heh, wasn't that episode hilarious? "Lee. La. Leela. Man! Lee LeMann. Lemon! Lee Lemon!"
the nibbler question was taken from the panel, yes. the vcd discussion was something i nabbed from him while getting my comic signed (yeah, i admit it). anyway, that was absolutely great!
i take that back.. yes, both of these were addressed from the panel. someone asked groening if he was aware that episodes were being released for free on the internet. the entire panel just started laughing like the guy was joking and said yes, they were aware but they werent pursuing it at the moment, they figured it was good promotion for the show. i asked groening personally about the VCD's (i asked about the "Coming soon to an illegal DVD" comment) before this was addressed. the nibbler thing was addressed when groening was talking about how in the 3rd season there are going to be some episodes based completely on the characters.. such as nibbler, and leela's secret (anyone have any guesses??). dont you remember any of this??

I knew it!! Ahem, I mean I strongly suspected as much. Since sci-fi makes so much use of time travel, a parody must inevitably do a send up of it.
So, does Nibbler travel back in time? or is his species very long lived and he was on earth 1000 years ago? Perhaps the rings on his teeth indicate 1000's of years, not single years.
My guess is that somehow, Fry must travel back in time to make sure he gets frozen. "I thought by this time in my life I'd be making the prank phone calls". I just bet that it's Fry from the future who makes the call in the first place. Then Nibbler chewed the leg on the chair so he's fall. Fry must not have seen nibbler when he fell and that's why he didn't recognize him in 3000.
What makes you think that the creature in the lab in the year 1999 is the same Nibbler who was discovered in 3000, and not just one of the same species?
