I saw a demonstration of real-time live animation. An actor backstage was wearing a motion suit and Bobcat Goldwaith (sp?) did the voice. A very high end computer rendered the animation based on the actors movement, then moved the mouth based on sound and added tail movement and eye blinking for realism. They had kids asking him questions and he was answering them inside a big screen TV.

The character was a dog with a pointed nose, I think it's from Nickelodeon. It was much more sophisticated than Max Headroom, but the same idea.

Doing multiple characters and scenery will be possible soon.

No, Poochie was the dog they added to Itchy and Scratchy (voiced by Homer) on a Simpsons episode. I've also seen real-time animation on Donny and Marie. Every so often they'll bring out some gear that each of them wear, and it controls a "virtual" Bill and Hillary Clinton.

As stated by someone else, it was Cartoon Network, not Nickelodeon. The name of the character was Moxy Pirate. After the special you've mentioned he was given his own TV show in which he would introduce classic Warner Bros. etc cartoons. Later, a sidekick "Flea" was introduced, voiced by Penn Gilliet of Penn & Teller. And there ya' go.
