Yep, and atleast I don't like that, 'cause I'm using a normal old fashioned 33.6 modem connection to download these newsgroups and for other surfing.

Ooo. Rough crowd.

There are a few reasons...

First, back in the day, most had little 2400-14.4k modems, or even worse their ISP had overloaded UseNet servers. Some still do!

Now the text newsgroups have messages that typically download in a second or two at 2400 baud, or a half second or so at 14.4. Even a 50 line medium sized message is only 1200 bytes when compressed.

Now imagine how much fun it is on a 14.4 line, going to read the next message, and suddenly finding out that you're stuck waiting for 60 seconds for a big binary to come down the pipe? Sucks doesn't it. Now this particular reason isn't as applicable as old, but still with a 56k modem, your 15-20 KB image will take 2-5 seconds, as opposed to the half second or so. For someone like me, with 1Mbit ADSL, I didn't even notice the extra tenth of a second download time.

The second, still relevant reason, is that Usenet today is HUGE! Pretend you are a newsadmin. Most newsadmins don't have the hardware to store a weeks worth of binaries ( currently running at 80 Gigabytes per day ), so you have to ELIMINATE all groups that have binaries in them.

To make a long story short, if a text group degenerates into having binaries, it's distribution around the world may be slashed.

Gotta draw a line somewhere, best that it's at the beginning of the road that leads to darkness.

Finally, it's tradition to 'lurk' and learn what's going on in a group before jumping in. Lots of different groups have different 'rules of ettiquette' and 'rules of use' and such. And all have their share of people who resent people who don't know this stuff yet :)
