X-Men DVD RC2 menu 'borrows' Starcraft sound effects - WTF?

Has anyone already mentioned this?

Yesterday I rented the DVD from our video rental and I was quite suprised when the main menu popped up zooming in on the X-labelled door. The moment the door opens is underligned with the Starcraft Terran Building liftoff sound (sound_misc_liftoff)! It's EXACTLY the same effect!

Before the door opens you get the 'sound_misc_button'-effect with quite a lot of reverb but it's still distinguishable. The language selection menu uses some modified Protoss Building sound but I'm not quite sure which.

Heck, can't those authoring dudes think of anything themselves? It's the second time I see some effects 'borrowed' in other media. The German electricity company 'e.on' used one of the Protoss sounds at the beginning of their new commercial campaign. After about two weeks they changed it to something different, maybe somone kicked their buts!

I can't post to binaries and I don't have any ftp. If anyone wants to give me an upload opportunity please mail me, it's mp3s of only 500 KB.

I wasn't going to rent the X-Men movie, but I am a hardcore Starcraft player. Now I'll have to rent the X-Men DVD just to check it out.

I noticed that your post originates form a German ISP. Is Starcraft translated into German or do you have to play in English?

I'm especially curious about what the characters say if you keep clicking on the same unit until they get annoyed.

Starcraft is localized to German, acutally it's the technical best localization I've seen so far. Good translations and also nice speakers.

Sorry, I always turn off theses messages immediately since the continuous 'acknowledgement' messages from any unit go on my nerves ;)

Of corse there is also the possibility that both the DVD-crew and the Starcraft Designers have used the same Soundarchive ... Most of the soundeffects are NOT especially made for the project.

I've noticed reused sound effects with quite a number of shows/movies/computer games/radio stations etc. Basically there are entire albums of sound effects that people can buy. So, when they need a door to open - they use the generic 'open door' effect.

I played that arcade game Gauntlet Legends - A LOT... and so I was used to hearing the noise of a metal gate opening... because well you go through a lot of them in that game... anyway then I started hearing that same sound effect EVERYWHERE! It did get annoying, but now you just have to accept it. I hate it when FM radio stations reuses Trek sound effects - especially ones that you KNOW they've just downloaded of the internet.

I think it's pretty common for sound bytes to be used over by various companies. I know I've heard the scream that dying soldiers make in the original Command and Conquer a movie before.
