I've been watching Futurama episodes off the Net in a vain attempt to catch up, and I just came to the one with the 'evil' Bender. WHAT IS WITH THE BEARD? South Park had evil characters with beards. Hercules had evil characters with beards. I'm starting to sense a theme..
Whats with the beards?

Yes, it was a convenience monkey, they called it "blip". Whenever they needed it as a plot device the monkey was there. Otherwise, it was never around.
They also used the Robbie the Robot model from Forbidden Planet in at least two episodes.
I saw some of the re-runs on Sci Fi channel a couple of years ago. They're pretty funny.

I'm noticing other shows predate this (Lost In Space, Star Trek), but I don't think it actually gained notoriety as signufying an evil person until Superman 3...where Clark fought his evil self, as a drug induced hallucination brought on by half-assed Kryptonite
Ugh, you people. Beards have been use to signify evil characters going back to 19th century stage melodramas (think villain with beard and mustache tying girl to railroad tracks), and probably earlier. It did not originate with any science fiction series!
