Bend Her - Go Sweden

In episode 'Bend Her' our future friends walked past a sign with the text 'Go Sweden" on it. The Professor suddenly goes crazy and rips the sign to pieces.

So... what was that all about?

As I recall, when Futurama was first launched, Matt Groening did a lot of press interviews to promote the new show. One of the people who interviewed him asked if The Simpsons was still on the air in the world of Futurama. He said it was but that fans were complaining that the first 500 years were definitely better than the last 500 years ;-)

it was because he said (can't remember an exact quote) all the cultural mixing was angrying up his blood....i.e he's a little bit racist :) then he sees the sign for another country (sweden) and gets so mad he tears the sign up

        Errr...I'm not sure what I meant....;0 I must have missed something
in the setup for that. Farnsworth is definitely your demented scientist (he
collects Doomsday Devices), and that's all way over the top, but I don't see
racism as a motivator for the character, is my point.
        It seems to me that the "Futurama" universe has supplanted what we
think of as racism today with appropriately updated prejudices - Bender's
comment about "robosexuals" in "I, Roommate" for example, etc. I just can't
buy 'racism' out of the blue for this. Now, I'm pretty sure I missed
something important during this airing, so I'm prepared to be corrected and
informed, but I just think the 'racism' motivation is far too convenient to
hang on the character. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I don't mean he's generally racist - just somewhat old and demented (like you say), and the appearance of the "French stereotypes" had driven him into such a rage that he would even attack Sweden... having re-read your earlier message, I can't really remember how I thought my point differed from yours :-)

I had who explained to me why those goofy Volvo commercials ("It's not your
Uncle Olaf's Volvo" - a jab at either Olds or Buick) were SO damn funny, at
least to swedes (us yanks mispronounce "Olaf" in a humorous way, it seems).
