Synopsis: A gigantic ball of trash launched in the 21th century is coming towards the earth, and the Planetary Express crew must find away to prevent it from impact.

SPOILERS

This is one of my favorite episodes by far. Even though I haven't seen Armageddon yet, the references were really obvious yet subtle (and hilarious nonetheless). The historical movie on the NNY garbage problem turning into a porn film had me in stitches. A few lapses in continuity here and there, but those don't get in the way. A.

DYNs: -Bender scratches himself while standing on the heap of garbage. -City hall has been bought out by the 20th century banking firm, Citibank (note the similarities between the two logos). -At least we know where all the AOL disks go... :) -When Fry instructs Lela to discard her doughnut, he refers to it as a cruller, although it sounds like he says "crawler." It actually kind of looks like something that would crawl, though...

Refs: -Armageddon (1999): Movie where a mining team has to blow up an asteroid moving towards Earth. -The Simpsons: Fry discovers a mound of Bart Simpson dolls, Bender pulls the string on one of them, it says "Eat my shorts," which Bender complies. He responds in full Homer Simpson mode: "Mmm...shorts..." -Star Trek (orig. series): Doors open with the same sound used in ST, same with the Leonard Nimoy collector's plate. FYI, the stupid Uranus joke is another ST reference, "Going around Uranus and picking up Klingons." -Beanie Babies: 20th Century treasure is 31st Century junk... -Ron Pompeil: The supposed "infomercial king", although I wouldn't know...I don't watch Infomercials.

Nitpicks: -Bender says, "Dibs on his CD player." In Fishful of Dollars (1ACV06), Fry had his CD player reposessed, didn't he? -Dr. Farnsworth places a piece of paper on an overhead projector (you need to use celluloid transparencies with an overhead projector, or an opaque projector).

Regardless...who in the 31st century would want a CD player anyway?

Again, it seems the producers don't care much in trying to keep updated for 1000 years in the future. Overhead projectors are almost dated by today's standards! Perhaps the celluloid transparency projector was redesigned to work with standard paper (or standard napkins.)

Perhaps Bender has a fetish for out-of-date audio equipment... Didn't he have a pin-up of a reel-to-reel tape machine in "I, Roommate"?

Prez Midnite............... out. e-mail:prezmid at disinfo dot net http://netjunk.com/users/prezmid/ "I should have been a plumber." - Albert Einstein

I thought it was a reference to Deep Impact at the same time.

Well, it is 1000 years in the future. The overhead projector could be more hi-tech.

What's the difference? ;)

Actually I thought the same thing. The burgers, and pizza and such hitting the earth (especially crashing through the skyscraper) were more 'Deep Impact'ish, while the PX crew traveling to the asteroid to blow it up was definitely 'Armageddon'.

The running gag each episode is trying to pick out the stuff from the 20th century, so congratulations, y'all found them.

I don't know if this is a ref or not, but the way the garbage was eventually destroyed was very similar to an episode of Red Dwarf ("White Hole"), where Lister plugs up a White Hole by "Playing pool with planets".
