Another season for Friends? July 24 2002

NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker left open the possibility today that television's top-rated show Friends might remain on the air beyond its upcoming ninth and presumed-to-be-final season starting in September.

When NBC and Friends producer Warner Bros Television announced a renewal deal in February, which sources said would pay each of the six co-stars $US1 million ($A1.86 million) per episode, the network and the studio said then that the 2002-2003 season would be the show's last.

The year before, many had suggested the comedy about six perky, coffee-drinking singles living in New York City had already peaked.

But with a popular story line culminating in May with Rachel giving birth to a child fathered by Ross, Friends enjoyed one its most successful years yet and was the most watched show in prime time last season.

The show's strong performance has stoked speculation about its fate, a question that came up as Zucker kicked off the network's annual summer press tour, where NBC is showcasing its new autumn shows for TV critics.

Asked whether he could say with ``certainty'' that Friends would leave the air at the end of the upcoming season, Zucker answered: ``I don't want to ever believe that it's absolutely going to be the end. I wouldn't 100 per cent put the nails in the coffin yet.''

i was watching the news a while back and matthew perry already said that they're going to have another season. so assuming that he wasn't lying, there_is_another one. :)

You know, we're probably going to see an awful lot of articles like this appearing in the media over the next year. But I doubt that most of them, if any, will really mean anything.

It's not exactly a shocker that the president of entertainment for NBC is going to try and keep people thinking that maybe "Friends" is going to stick around for more than just one more season. _Of course_ Zucker is going to say that, because that is what he, and the rest of the NBC execs, want very badly to be true. "Friends" is a big hit show for the network, it makes a lot of money for them, and it has even become a prestige show after all these years. As long as the show continues to be so successful, Zucker is going to do everything in his power to fight to keep "Friends" on the air for as long as he can. But that doesn't mean he is going to succeed. Because in the end, it ain't up to him.

It's not even up to BKC, not really. Right now, it's all about the 6 actors. THEY are the ones who decided to pull the plug on the show, and they are the only ones who can really make the decision to keep the show on the air longer. When I see one of these articles that quotes one or more of the actors as saying that perhaps "Friends" will continue beyong season 9, then I'll take it seriously and start thinking about a possible season 10. But not before.
