If you go to Mapquest.com you can enter the address given below by Coffee Mug, (Grove St and Bedford) and get an aerial photo of the building at that location. I believe it's the large dark building on the northeast corner of the intersection in the center of the photo.

I don't see the fountain ( from the opening credits) nearby though. I don't know if there really is one there or not.

The fountain from the opening credits is located at the Warner Bros. Studios lot in Burbank, California. That's why you couldn't find it in New York. ;-)

I'm not sure why Christopher Street was the chosen direction however. It could have been in any direction from the apartment. There is certainly no such coffee shop on Christopher, although there is a Starbucks there (across the street).
