The future of Friends� actors

When Friends end,what show will pay them 24 million bucks for 1 season? Of course the movies are not their future

No matter what they do, they are set for life. They have already made a fortune from Friends and another $24 million (minus tax etc) is just the icing on the cake. David Schwimmer is a good director and a good actor, even though Ross is such a (insert expletive), so it wouldn't surprise me if he did a few films as director, maybe moving more behind the camera as his film career progresses. Matthew Perry is a very funny person and I'd like to see him in comedy films rather than romantic comedy. Jennifer Aniston (Pitt) is a very good serious actress as are Courteney Cox-Arquette & Lisa Kudrow. IMO, it's Matt LeBlanc who'll struggle the most post Friends. I think his best avenue would be action films where a wide range of acting ability isn't required. I know some of you will disagree with me, especially about Matt LeBlanc, so fire away. As much as I think that Friends is the funniest US comedy ever, I'm glad it'll finish after season 9. For me, it's David Schwimmer's & Jennifer Aniston's (Pitt's) careers I'm the most interested in post Friends, as I think they are the best actors of the six. And that has nothing to do with me being pro Ross & Rachel.

They all get a percentage of the syndication profits too, don't they? They'll all be cashing in on "Friends" for the rest of their lives, even if they never show up on screen again.

I believe there is an time expiry on those syndication profits the actors earn with the % getting lower every year the series is in syndication and its limited to a certain certain number of years a season is in syndication as wekk. I suspect they no longer get the profits from the first seasons like 1 to 3. Of course they'll be able to cash in on their popularity by lending their names to merchandizing or even in future projects that I'm sure will be pouring in for the Friends stars.

There's a saying - ride the gravy train for as long as you can. This one's appropriate too - the grass is always greener on the other side. Celebrities in general often lead surreal lives and are the subject of great public adoration and envy. They have people constantly around them telling them what to do and telling them how beautiful or wonderful they are. They spend tens of millions on houses, expensive taste and sometimes invest their millions in potential failures - easy come, easy go. Some have expensive drug habits as well, cocaine, the latest designer drug, etc. You name it.

Of course Schwimmer have a great future as a director,he founded a theatre company and he really loves the art of acting. I think Matt can do whatever he wants,before Friends he was making music videos.Courteney don�t need to demonstrate anything and Jennifer will not have any trouble if she wanna make some movies,but i think Lisa and Mathew should be a comedian couple.

David may end up behind the camera somewhere, since he seems to be at least as good a director as any other Friends director, I think he wont get any good parts in a movie though, everybody in the casting agencies will think of him as Ross. I dont know what Matt LeBlanc is capable of doing other than making a womanizer probably the most popular character on a sitcom (which everybody could do ;) ), but since he always said he liked working on the show, maybe they'll come up with a spin off for him? Or as he seems to be a very sensible guy, maybe he saved so much of the money he's made/making with Friends, he could stay at home and eat sandwiches for the rest of his life!?

Other than that, I think the main problem for all of the six is, that in the mind of the audience, they'll always "one of the Friends", so like whenever you see Matt Perry in a movie, you're kinda waiting for MLB to show up for a round of Foosball... Dont ya think? This has happened to a lot of TV series actors...

Yes, they all have to worry about becoming typecast. Hell, forget "becoming" typecast, they already have been. The only one of the six who I think can break out of that stereotype is Courteney Cox, since she had somewhat of a movie career before she signed on to "Friends." I saw Jen Aniston in "Office Space" and thought, "Hey, there's Rachel!" I saw Matt LeBlanc in "Lost in Space" and thought "Hey, there's Joey!" But when I saw Courteney Cox in "1000 Miles to Graceland"... awwww, who am I kidding, I didn't see that stupid movie. What was my point again? I'm hungry.

I think they will all suffer a little typecasting but if their future projects and acting are good enough people will watch. Matthew Perry is funny and if he's put his past problems behind him I can see him doing other things Some people in Hollywood may be a little hesitant to hire him because of these past problems, the last time he went into rehab didn't they have to scrap a movie he was working on?. CCA did have somewhat of a movie career before Friends wasn't she in the live action version of Hee-Man & the Masters Of the Universe movie they did in the '80's? :-)

The reason I think Friends is still going is because none of the actors have had really big box-office success, or they would have left long ago. This season IMHO has not been as good as some of the previous ones, and the only reason NBC/WB is going to pay 1 Mill each to the actors is they don't have a replacement series good enough to take over the timeslot.

I think season 9 will see a big drop in the ratings.

And I think that season 9 will see unprecedented ratings, and solidify the series' status as one of the best sitcoms ever. The fact that the coming season will be the show's last is going to bring all sorts of casual viewers out of the woodwork. As a matter of fact, I'd bet you right now that the series finale of "Friends" will beat out the series finale of "Seinfeld."

I have seen almost all the movies Lisa Kudrow has been in and I don't see any "Phoebe" in it. And also CCA's "Scream" films were very "un-Monica." JA, DS, MLB, and MP all were in films that made me think of friends. Even MP's performance in "The Whole Nine Yards" made me think of Chandler. That was a great movie though.

With regard to David Schwimmer, I agree that the characters he has played in theatrical movies (the ones I've seen, that is) all have Ross-like qualities, although Max Abbitt from "Kissing A Fool" is nothing like Ross Geller as a person, he just has some similar mannerisms.

However, DS has appeared in two TV movies in the last year -- "Band of Brothers" for HBO and "The Uprising" for one of the broadcast nets (NBC?). He was fine in both roles and completely different from Ross. I've never seen his stage work, and I can't speak to his range as an actor, but he's quite capable of performances that don't remind one of his role on "Friends."

Agreed about CCA in the "Scream" movies and MP in "The Whole Nine Yards."

In any case, actors can be quite successful playing same basic type over and over again. Tom Cruise and George Clooney come to mind as examples of one-note actors, and I think they've done rather well. :-) And in Clooney's case, he's just playing an extension of his character from "ER." There's no reason why any of the "Friends" actors couldn't do the same if they chose to.

I wasn't talking about his TV-movies. I was talking about movies that are out in theatres(whats the word for those....hmm...film?). I haven't seen BofB and his character in Uprising was definately not like Ross. But i was talkin about his movies Apt Pupil, the Pallbearer..etc.

I enjoyed watching "The Many Loves of Alex P. Keaton" on Nick at Nite. They had the two-part show where Alex first meets his soon to be new girlfriend played by Courteney Cox. It was interesting to see her in another sitcom with a completely different character. I was not a big "Family Ties" viewer, and I didn't remember that the character was played by Courteney until I saw it last week. It was very different from Friends, and Scream.

There's a hint of sneer in your post. You know no other project will pay them that kind of money, and what you are insinuating is that they have no right to want to end this and do something else.

I'm thinking that, if they invest their money well, none of them will ever have to take a job just for the money ever again and they will be able to accept projects they love just because they love them. They will all be independently wealthy. For David, who has a great shot at a career behind the camera, the idea must be unusually enticing.
