Isn't it ironic that gentiles Courtney Cox & Jennifer Aniston play Jewesses on TV but Lisa Kudrow who is Jewish plays a gentile.Ironic??!!

I did not know Lisa Kudrow was Jewish, but I know Monica and Rachel aren't Jewish. There have been many times when Rachel has talked about what Christmas was like as a little girl in her family, and Monica and Ross always are celebrating it too, with a Christmas tree in the apartment.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Rachel isn't Jewish, but I'm nearly positive that Monica and Ross are.

Actually, Rachel is Jewish. At the beginning of the show she fit the term JAP (Jewish American Princess) to a T and so does her sister Jill. Remember in season 4, Phoebe's Christmas song? She said Happy Chanukah, Monica and spin the dreidle, Rachel. Monica and Ross are half-Jewish. I don't think Lisa Kudrow is Jewish, but she might be because she made a Passover joke a couple of years ago at the SAG awards on why this night is different from all other award shows. Yes, the characters do celebrate Christmas, but it is not that uncommon for Jewish people to celebrate it. It is mainly a commercial holiday.

That is pretty stereotypical. Just because someone is spoiled, does NOT mean that they're Jewish. What about homeless Jews? Or Chelsea Clinton? The American President's daughter is not Jewish, but definately is spoiled. The only reliable source is your comment on Phoebe's song. ~Sara~ "Hey, look at me! I'm Chandler. Could I BE wearing more clothes?" "They don't know that we know they know we know." "Actually, it's Ms. Chinandlor Bong." "My Bing-a-ling!"

Some reform Jews celebrate Christmas as a *secular* holiday because everybody else does. These characters do not strike me as being spectacularly devout. However, Christians for the most part do NOT celebrate Hannukah unless they are sharing the time with Jewish friends. The fact that the Gellers recognize the holiday with each other indicates strongly that they are Jewish.

Wait there was also that whole um you know, celebrating the birth of Christ thing.. ;)

Yeah I know, it's very commercial now, but it was originally the reason why people celebrate in the first place.

Well, the gift-giving is relevant to the all the kings giving their most precious earthly posessions to Christ in the manger. The star on top of the tree symbolizes the star of Bethlehem (the one the wise men followed), and the partying? Well, I suppose if the birth of the savior of mankind just occured, you'd party too. Not sure that's the reason I heard for the trees. . . .

And don't get me started on the Christmas songs. . . .

Definitely not the religous aspect..I never got the feeling that any of them ever were that religous. We know that Joey is Catholic, but I highly doubt he attends mass on Sundays lol.

Same for everyone else, they may believe in God or have some beliefs, but aren't very active in their respective faiths, if any. (I.E. Phoebe).

When I said that I meant for everyone in general, not the characters on the show. These days a large majority of those who celebrate it do so because of the commercial aspect, not because of their religous beliefs.

However, very few gentiles celebrate Hanukkah.

It is assumed only that Monica is possibly Jewish, though their are no clear signs that she is.

We already had a LONG thread about this subject. For the most part, the producers try to keep religion out of the series.

Definitely.

Theres the people that try to read everything - minority Theres the people that try to read the threads they think look good, or they responded in Theres the people that only read the threads they participate in Theres the people that don't want the group as a whole, just a thread, which they have to have started because its their question, which is rarely one that wasn't covered recently.

Well, I don't see how. You click on the newsgroup, the headers are downloaded. In a threaded newsreader I don't see how you can miss things to that extent.

Well, no, actually guys it may have more to do with the fact that ATF is in the alt.* hierarchy. Many, many newsservers set the expiration times for articles in alt.* to be very short. There's just too much junk to keep around that long. Sure, they can individually set expiration dates for particular groups, but there are over 11,000 groups in alt.* on MY server, and that does not include the alt.binaries.*, which has probably another 1,000 or so. There are so many alt.joe.blow.must.die.die.die garbage groups that there isn't much signal in all the noise. . . .

STBR but "big deal". Freeserve expires articles after 5-10 days (there doesn't seem to be a fixed time) and it's by no means unusual in that. A lot of college/university newsservers run at 4 days expiration, which is infuriating if you have a long weekend.... Just because *yours* is superdooper, don't believe everyone else is in the same boat. And that goes for lots of things.

Anyway, that's what I was trying to find out - when people post asking a question that was debated to death 8 days before, it's not their fault.

Jacqui, I think you took offense to something that Tennant was just inquiring about. . . Just and observation . . .

But you are correct. Many universities set the expiration at 4 days, so that you might have a shot at reading a response over a long weekend, if you got on it the first thing Tuesday morning. . .

For those of you not intimately familiar with how newsservers work, a little informational side-trip from a newsserver admin . . .

Newsservice is an extremely computationally-intensive task. Well, actually, it's EXTREMELY I/O intensive, (not much CPU involved).

For example, my newsserver is a grossly underpowered box nowadays. It's vintage 1992, back when there were only about 1000 newsgroups, and only 6 digits worth of people on the Internet. There are now about 13,000, and we have several orders of magnitude more people out there. It cannot accept a full-blown newsfeed (not to mention a full-newsfeed will affect the performance of anything short of a T-3 connection), and still keep up the tasks of expiring all the articles in time for the next batch of articles it needs to start expiring, all-the-while accepting all the new articles). It starts to "throttle back" in accepting new articles, of which "build-up" in the form of a queue of articles at my upstream provider This queue will be noticed if it gets too big, which then leads to a phone call to me, which then leads to me telling them to "dump" the queue (throw them out). Ultimately, this means missed articles, which is a BAD thing, when you're trying to actually use Newsgroups to stay in contact with customers (you can't pick and choose WHICH articles to dump very easily. . . ). The trick is to accept just enough news feed and set the expiration, cataloging, transmission, and a host of other parameters just right so that you can get the most from the newsfeed (since it all costs the same, basically), and your machine can keep up. (Drinking from a firehose is not an absurd metaphor in this case).

The harddrive in the computer running my newsserver is CONSTANTLY reading or writing something (i.e. the little access LED never turns off). Now of course an ISP's newsserver(s) - (they are likely to have several in a distributed heirarchy) are going to be significantly faster. They have 80MB/sec harddrives (or faster), mine is 5MB/sec. They have multiple high-speed bus-mastering harddrive controllers and channels, so that the load is "striped" across multiple channels, mine single machine is a single bus, single controller, single everything. ISPs do this because they are in the business of providing a wide variety of services to many people of vastly differing interests.

I have to take requests from my coworkers for how long a (non-essential) newsgroup will stick around. A few dozen are about 14 days (including ATF). Some of the technical ones pertaining to what my company does are 30 days, one is 90 days. The rest are 3 days.

The point to this long digression is that this is directly related to how important some or all of the Usenix newsgroups are to the various organizations. Obviously the more important, the more resources one throws at it. comp.lang.idl-pvwave is what WE do. That is where all the resources go. alt.tv.friends is probably one step up from alt.binaries.pictures.of.my.neighbors.cat, as far as companies are concerned, so I take what I can get. . .

Yes but as Tennant points out, its a server rule, not a local rule. Responses to locally stored server expired threads will still be correctly threaded when pushed around to people who still store the thread, and if they don't, they get a new Re: thread. Whats the biggie? Change yer settings.

I certainly don't. I don't even pretend to have the time or patience i'm afraid. I just try my best not to leave people hanging after taking the time to respond to me, and also to make my way into conversations that interest me. I've been known to make the odd mistake :)
