It is very common for people to use an acronym and then reuse some of the words of the acronym in their sentence. When I said, "scuba breathing mechanism" I was effectively saying (as Tennant so aptly pointed out), "Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus breathing mechanism." The words breathing apparatus followed by breathing mechanism represented the redundant part. :-)

Another example: At work, we have an internal human resources system called CAS. It stands for Corporate Administration System. Many people say they "logged their expense report in the CAS system." It's another oops. The problem comes from the fact that my coworkers are so used to using the acronym CAS that they've forgotten what the letters stand for--such as my original misuse of SCUBA (even though I knew better, but went ahead anyway, thinking no one would notice). :-)

That's quite a list. I've seen some people try to doctor up the repeat by changing the word to a synonym, such as: OPEC nations, or LCD screen. That's actually the sort of thing I did in making my repeater with SCUBA. I used mechanism in place of apparatus.

I think, if you use OPEC as the name of the organization, it works. In fact, I think the rule applies generally when using the acronym as a name. I seem to recall being taught that somewhere, but who knows. It may have been a fanciful dream.
