Why would I not be allowed to buy the Friends DVD's Seasons 1-6 from the UK?
What I'm trying to ask is that why would it be a problem to view the uk version on DVD in North America?
Sorry, Brain freeze today. Am I making sense? I want to purchase the DVD's, but if I can't I need to know why so I don't waste my money. Thanks.
DVDs are regionally encoded to help combat piracy. A DVD from the UK is encoded region 2 and therefore would not work in most region 1 DVD players. There are some players that bypass this protection but they are not the norm.

You mean, if a seller in the US wanted his hands on these editions and copies them onto VHS or recorded DVD's to sell to US customers, he can't, right?
That's too bad, because I was willing to pay the $60/disc to get the entire collection. I've recorded the episodes onto VHS, but still, it's digital quality versus fuzzy tv cable. :)

Actually, the DVD distributors put a sort of Code into the disc to prevent piracy. So when you plug the DVD player through the VCR, the video's picture starts to fade in and out every few seconds. Pretty smart.
I thought each disc contained 1 season each. That's why I indicated $60 per disc. Thanks Tennant.

BTW, region coding does not combat piracy, it has no effect, since if you can play the disc then you can copy it - except that is where macrovision comes in, but you can turn that off too. The purpose of regional coding is to restrict sales to areas where the seller owns the rights to sell, but personal imports via the internet are perfectly legal & cheaper too.
