How many endings have there been like this already? Rachel chasing Ross to the airport and Ross with the girl who shaved her head are 2 that come to mind. They should have just tied up the damn storyline already and moved on. Do they honestly think one person believes Rachel will just marry Joey? When you have to drag a storyline on for 9 years then you know its time to end the show.
I guess that I am one of the few people who like the season finale. I never really liked Ross in the first place. If he loves Rachel so much, then why did he marry Carol and later Emily. He even had his chance with Rachel but blew it. Even after knocking Rachel up and having her live with him, he insisted on dating that girl from the baby store. No, Rachel deserves somebody who will be committed to her. Say all you can about how dumb Joey is but you can't deny how loyal he is to his friends. Though he has never been in a serious relationship on the show, he doesn't put on airs about how any of his relationships are going.
Joey admitted to Ross that his feelings for Rachel was the first time that he was in love. The writers did a good job of keeping the J-R out of the episode between Joey's date with Rachel and the season finale. It really caught people off guard.
The fact that Ross needed Phoebe to "convince" him to pursue Rachel only proves my point that Ross will never truly be commited to Rachel.
Joey on the other hand only needs Rachel's okay to be committed to her.
I know that I will get flamed by this but I really want the Rachel/Joey thing to work out. Ross had his chance for 8 seasons now. He may be a good dad to Ben but he will be a terrible life partner to Rachel. In the end I would like to see him back with Carol.
Ross married Carol because he hasn't seen Rachel since High School.
Technically, Ross didn't really marry Emily. By saying the wrong name, it was clear that Ross was confused. But then, Rachel and Ross broke up, what do you expect Ross to do? Never move on??

Neither Rachel will be truly commited to Joey. And no evidence shows that Joey will truly be commited to Rachel. Rachel only agreed to marry Joey because she was freaked out by what Janice said. I kinda have the feeling that Joey only likes Rachel because she is her roommate, and he misses the feeling of having her around.
If Joey is so loyal to his friends, he is not gonna "betray" Ross.
I don't think this R&J will work out. Even Matt himself said in an interview will E&W that Rachel belongs with Ross.

Yes Carol is a lesbian and I don't think Ross should be back with her. However, Ross was committed to Carol. The feelings didn't just blow away as soon as he jumped into dating someone else. I think Ross needs to show this type of commitment to whoever he ends up with. And honestly, I've never seen him show this commitment to Rachel.

Well, let's see. He met Carol in college. He'd been out of touch with Rachel for years, and never thought he had a chance with her. He tried to move on with his life by marrying Emily after RACHEL rejected HIM. Not the other way around. Folks are allowed to try to rebound from being dumped; indeed it's unhealthy if you don't. Unfortunately, Ross' love for Rachel destroyed his marriage to Emily.

Actually, no, he didn't. He went out with her once under the impression that Rachel was fine with it. The moment Rachel told him to stop dating, he did without so much as a single word of argument, even though Rachel herself realized she was being unreasonable and said so. That episode proved the opposite of your thesis; it showed his complete devotion to Rachel, not his disinterest.
Yep, and if she would stop playing mind games with Ross, he'd follow her anywhere. Every single time they have come together it has been Rachel, not Ross, who severed the relationship. Every single time. He has never, ever broken up with her. He is, however, now afraid that if he gets involved with Rachel, another breakup could be damaging for Emma. That's a very mature, selfless and long-sighted view to take.

There, you just said it yourself. Joey IS loyal, to all of his friends. Can you really see him shafting Ross by giving Rachel a ring that belonged to Ross's grandmother and pretending it's from him? Can you see him proposing, for real, when he now believes that Ross was about to do the same thing? If he does that, he's not the Joey that I thought he was.

Joey just isn't "quick" enough to come up with that...wouldn't he be showing her? And the fact that he was on one knee was just a coincidence.

If you watched Joey's face when Rachel said Okay..he was totally stunned...like he was about to say something to let her know she's misunderstood..that was when they cut to Ross striding down the hall with the bunch of flowers.
He wasn't trying to 'show' her anything. He just happened to spin around when she spoke, and, being Joey, wasn't quick enough to hide the ring box. She assumed the rest, said "okay" (sounded real romantic to me...;), and his eyes bugged out - ala Joey style - when he finally 'got it'...as in, OMG, she thinks I proposed!!
