The official website will explain TiVo in its entirety, but essentially, TiVo is a digital video recording device and service. Instead of video tapes, TV is recorded directly onto the hard disk inside the digital recorder. The recorder is sold separately, and the TiVo service must be ordered for $9.95 monthly or $249 for a lifetime. TiVo is known for allowing users to rewind, replay, pause (and fast forward in certain situations) Live TV as you watch it unfold. I just got it, and I have to say, it's really great. It allows you to set "Season Passes" for certain shows or actors, meaning that TiVo will automatically record Friends for me every time that it is shown on television, whether I know it's playing or not. Now I never have to worry about setting my VCR to tape a new episode of Friends, or worry about the VCR actually taping the episode. I can also watch each episode frame by frame, if I wish to do so. TiVo also relieves you of the burden of video tapes, since the shows are recorded onto the hard disk of the digital recorder. The only disadvantage to the service that I have found is that the digital recorders usually hold only 30 hours of recording space, meaning that, eventually, you have to delete some of the programs you record in order to make room for new ones.

Yes, I'm almost certain that can be done when the TiVo recorder is hooked up to both a TV and VCR. However, with the amount difficulty I had understanding the directions on how to hook up the recorder to a TV and VCR, I was forced to unhook my VCR and just attach the recorder to the TV. I may attempt another try setting up my VCR again, but for now I'm too scared of screwing something up and ending up without *any* TiVo :)

TiVo is great -- I have 4 so far (I have a satellite system), and got them all hooked up to VCR's (I tape and save Friends, Drew Carey Show, Whose Line is it Anyway, Just Shoot Me, Will and Grace -- yeah, yeah, yeah -- I'm a geek). But you should see behind my TV -- it's a mess of wires :)

Everyone knows that Tivo is slang for pregnant :-)
