All americans are fat!
That's the same as me saying all guys named Jon are ignorant based on what you said. That would be wrong of me, because I haven't every person name Jon, as I'm sure you haven't met every American. I'd really love to see the statistics that you decided to base your statement upon.
====== "Life is never without love" -Sheryl Crow
Actually, as a nation, the United States *does* have a proportionally higher number of overweight people. My theory? We walk less; places are more spread out than they are in Europe. During the three months I lived in England, I could walk to the grocer without batting an eye. Here, it would be dangerous and very long and I won't do it. It isn't just laziness. It's actually more difficult to do. I have to get my daily exercise on a treadmill, which is a little sad, I guess.

You "haven't every person name Jon"....?.....ok, no amusing comment about grammer here. I was only messing about like I said in my second post. And dont you think that this is the reaction I wanted. Also, I have met every single American, and they were all, dumb, fat, and.... dumb......
If you respond to this it will prove a point!
Chill baby Jon.
P.S Fisrtly there is no such place as America! North America a continent, and South America. Secondly (getting back to the alt.tv.friends theme) U.S television programs are a lot better then anything the UK tries to make. ER, Friends etc are so so so much better than anything the UK could try and make. Have you seen the U.K's version of ER? Its called Casualty and is the worst acted most contrived program ever... complete shit. Blah... cant be bothered to right anymore....
Jon
Let's see......let's see..........I could kill myself for posting a reply to your post, but I have to stick up for myself, those that are offended to your post on this board, my country, my fellow citizens that inhabit it, and the world.......if that's not pushing it.
PREJUDICE..........this is a strong word to use, but I must use it.... The existence of prejudice is only good because it enables people to see the wrongs and make rights. If prejudice didn't exist, people wouldn't go to such extremes to fix it, thereby making good in the world.
In my Social Inequalities and Schooling class I learned a lot about prejudice and how not to practice it. I admit I was prejudiced then to some extent, although I was very unaware of it. It wasn't until I learned more about it, and how to not practice it, that I realized just how prejudice of a person I was.
We all have our rights to voice our opinions. Since you decided to take this right, I think it's my turn to take my right.
I am very unhappy with what you've said:
every
Whenever the word ALL is used, it is an overgeneralization. I am an American, but one from the United States. I weigh 83 pounds and am 5 feet 3/4 of an inch tall........this is considered UNDERWEIGHT. Now, if your statement is true, I would also have to be FAT. Since I am not fat, your statement is not valid.
Dumb? Do you call all of us dumb? I am in college, and although this doesn't mean I'm smart (you can be dumb and be in college, I've seen it), it doesn't mean I'm dumb. I can spell, I am bilingual, I am culturally aware, and my GPA is high. I am not racist, I volunteer (and was the secretary of the Key Club, a volunteer organization in highschool), I am truthful, I love coffee, I have friends from all over the world, etc.....I could go on! All of my friends are very intelligent, some too much in my opinion. So, the dumb point is also not a valid statement.
So, because I respond to this point, that means I am dumb and fat? Dearie, dearie......I see we have a lot of growing up to do. Spending all of this time on "hate" and "prejudice" is not good for you nor the world. I have learned this very well from one little class I had to take not even a year ago. Maybe it would be wise for every person in the world to take that class! Your energy is better spent on things that do good. Smile at a stranger, laugh at a joke, volunteer somewhere, do something! (Hey, that's an American volunteer club!) Leave your mark on the world and make it good.......
I do not hold anything against you, as I am not being prejudice. You have a chance to become anti-prejudice until the last breath you take. I hope you will, for your own good. Hate is a very powerful tool. I read a poem on it.......I'll have to give you the name of the author. You might want to read it. And, no, the author is not American.
However, your "points" hold some truth. It's true that a lot of Americans are fat! I know quite a few. Reasons: busy lives (so we eat fast food), US is huge, so we drive everywhere (my highschool was 8 miles away from me, my college is at least 12), some parents don't care, thyroid disease.....I could add more........
SOME Americans are dumb........ none I know, but I could debate this back in highschool when some kids took forever to read. I'd always dread this, read ahead, and get called on. The teacher never thought I paid attention because I didn't know where we were.
Anyways, your ideas are true, not your statements. Oh, and everyone makes typos sometimes, give them a break! Just relax and enjoy life, you'll love others and they'll love you.
Signing out, hope I didn't offend anyone!
God bless you!

Hm. Last time I checked mine, I'd gone from 24.x to 22.x. Based on what I assume to be my current height and weight I'm probably around the 21 mark now, and stable there, which is just fine and dandy as far as I'm concerned. I have a friend who's low down in the 15-20 range, and one who scores an impressive 32 - and who has two friends shorter and heavier than he is.

Hmm... I think you missed out on the sarcasm...
In the previous post, the mostly harmless Raven claimed:
Now *there*'s a truth: There are a LOT of people who wouldn't know sarcasm from real honest writing if you'd write it down in huge letters and hold it in front of them! And, judging from what I have seen from the UK / US (on tv, books, internet, chat, etc), I think UK people are a lot more into sarcasm than US people. The fact that people don't understand this sarcasm and take it seriously, is often of great bewilderment to those who do, because they feel like they're so much smarter with this `gift'. Myself, I can be quite sarcastic, but I try not to be because it's (too) often misinterpreted as something I really mean.
Bram
Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Bram doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...
I once heard something which so far has proved true in my experience: the only people in the US who are likely to get the sarcasm side of UK humour are those who live in NYC and possibly LA, or those who've had an extended stay in the UK at some point; everyone else seems to think we're being offensive, which is why I tend to stick multiple smileys into my posts just to be on the safe side. [1] And damn it, that's something I'm going to have to remember when I'm writing that movie of mine... grrrrr.
Tina (who's likely to still be writing it this time next year at the rate she's going...)

Yeah. That must be it. How could we not see that, while it was right in front of us?
..okay, how would you interpret that? Would you think I fully agree with your statement and feel silly for not having noticed it before? Or would you consider it sarcasm? There are no smilies, but from the words you *could* make up that it is sarcasm. At least, I can imagine I'd post something like that and expect readers to understand it's sarcasm. (which it is in this case, albeit I don't mean it, it's just an example to presumably show that sarcasm doesn't need smilies and face-to-face conversation to be understood as sarcasm)
Bram.
yea I did think it was sarcasm. I was debating it and was hoping I could tell for sure from the rest of your post.

but if someone says
oh, I love school.
Would you have any idea without knowing the person?
~Act
In the previous post, the mostly harmless Activia claimed:
No, but one shouldn't expect people to interpret that as sarcasm without a context. Perhaps it would work if the person saying that is well-known, but even then the newcomers wouldn't understand. And since the UK people expect everyone else to be sarcastic, as they all are in England, they assume that even such simple messages are interpreted as such ;-)

In the previous post, the mostly harmless Activia claimed:
Sure it does, I'm not saying one should assume other people understand, rather the contrary. I was trying to explain some people *do* assume others understand their sarcasm even without much context (and that's bad, very bad..bad people!), but that you can be sarcastic and have everyone and his dog understand it. I hope I belong to the latter.
Bram
I heard Bram's cries on the wind...
I agree completely. These days I try not to use smileys in my email and posting, because I think they're drastically over-used, but when I'm being sarcastic I do generally put one in. Some of the time people still don't recognise it, but it's much easier to defend a misconstrued post if there's a smiley in there. (Of course, the flip side of the coin is people who write genuine insults but then put smileys after them, like that makes it all right.)
In the previous post, the mostly harmless Raven claimed:
I do overuse them. When I don't know if I should put one in, I put one in ;-)

I agree, that's a cheap getaway. Usually it's obvious enough though, and someone's bound to jump in and prick through the soap bubble.

Can anyone tell me what any of this has to do with the TV show "Friends"...............
I heard Laurie's cries on the wind...
Just to provide a (presumably controversial) counterpoint, all of the Americans I know personally are at least on the heavy side. I don't know the precise medical definition of "fat" (since it's probably been revised for the nine thousandth time since I last could be bothered to check), but it wouldn't surprise me.
On the other hand, I don't know that many Americans face to face, so it isn't a particularly representative sample.
The only way to answer questions like this, of course, is to get hold of lovely medical statistics, and you could come up with a "true" answer based on whatever trend has taken hold of medical science at the moment.
Alternatively, we *could* all recognise jokes and mistakes for what they are, and ignore racist comments, proving what nondiscriminatory people we all are really, rather than using nasty posts as springboards for rants.
(And, yes, I'm *well* aware that I'm not above what I've just described. Call me a hypocrite if you must, but at least listen to what I'm saying.)
But not as fat as you, FATSO!!!!

'All Americans are sticks or bricks'
