TV Land Goes Dark for 'Friends' Finale

It's not like the final episode of "Friends" will need much help in the ratings, but cable's TV Land is planning to shut down when the show says goodbye on Thursday, May 6. Rather than air its regular classic-TV slate that night, TV Land will devote the hours prior to the finale to pre-"Friends" appearances by the six principal cast members on other shows. The network will then go dark from 9 to 10 p.m. ET, when the finale airs.

Or rather, viewers will see a group of TV Land staffers gathered around a TV set. Someone will look up from time to time to remind the audience to flip over to NBC.

"The end of 'Friends' is the end of an era in television history, TV Land president Larry W. Jones says in a statement. "'Friends' has proven itself to be a modern classic, and TV Land wants to be sure no viewers accidentally miss this historic event."

TV Land did something similar for the final episode of "Seinfeld" in 1998.

Surprisingly, no corporate synergy is in play here. TV Land is part of the Viacom-owned MTV Networks family, while "Friends" airs on GE-owned NBC and is produced by Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner.

The "Before They Were 'Friends'" retrospective will air on TV Land from 6 to 9 p.m. ET May 6. It will feature each cast member in another series: Lisa Kudrow on "Cheers," Matt LeBlanc on "Just the Ten of Us," Jennifer Aniston on "Ferris Bueller," David Schwimmer on "The Wonder Years," Matthew Perry on "Who's the Boss?" and Courteney Cox on "Family Ties."

Actually, I'd have to agree to "historic event". Any show, nowadays that can last more than at least 5 years with successful ratings is ok by me.

Anything that has had such an effect on American culture is more than "just" a TV show.

I don't remember any of them being in any of these! Granted I never saw "Ferris Bueller", "The Wonder Years" or "Just the Ten of Us" -- and I only saw "Whos the Boss" a couple times -- but I watched "Cheers" and "Family Ties", and I don't remember Kudrow or Cox on those shows. Were they just single guest shots that maybe I missed?

The CC role on Family Ties was more than one episode since she was Alex's girlfriend.

I remember Matthew Perry on Growing Pains.

Courteney was on Famly Ties for a season, I believe the last year of the show. She played Alex's girlfriend after he and Ellen broke up. "Ferris Bueller" was a short-lived series, less than one full season, based on the Matthew Broderick movie. Jennifer played Ferris' sister, the character that was played by Jennifer Gray in the movie (trivia-Jennifer Gray was Mindy on Friends).

David was the boyfriend of the older sister character on Wonder Years. "Just The Ten Of Us" was a short lived spin off of Growing Pains. Matt's appearance is a guest shot. Matthew was a recurring character for part of a season on Growing Pains (Sandy, Carol's boyfriend who dies after driving drunk and crashing the car), so I'm not sure why they're showing his guest shot in Who's The Boss instead. I'm guessing TVLand doesn't have the broadcast rights to Growing Pains. And finally, Lisa's part in Cheers was a guest shot, too. She plays a girl Woody is in a play with. she has long dark brown hair.

Lisa was also in the last episode of Newhart, as one of the Darryl's wives. Matthew was also in an episode of Just the Ten of Us, a pretty funny episode. He was a fake date for one of the daughters, because the dad wouldn't approve of the guy she really went out with.

Actually as someone else mentioned, she was on the show for two years, 1987-88 and 1988-89. All the shows with Courtney are actually running now daily on TV Land. It's definitely worth a look for those interested in seeing them for the first time or seeing them again.
