The orgination of Jealousy:

I thought that maybe we could analyze each character towards there Jealousy. I would love to do them all right now but I dont have time. I'll do Chandler tonight since this episode that I saw repeated inspired this thread.

Many of the characters have Jealousy issues, but there is reasons behind them. For example take Chandler. He has been in love with 3 women, that we have seen. The first one and the most serious relationship is Janice. How did he and Janice break up? Janice kissed her X-boyfriend. Then we go to the next girl he was in love with Kathy. How did they break up? She cheated on him with Nick.

Ok that's one I'll do the rest tommorro.

Chandler didn't break up with Janice out of jealousy, but made the noble sacrifice of sending her back to her family...

"I think you should go back with Gary. I don't wanna be the guy that breaks up a family. Y'know, when my parents split up, it was because of that guy. Whenever I would see him I was always think y'know 'You're the reason, you are the reason why they're not together' and I hated that guy."

Chandler's courage then failed him, and he begged Janice to stay, but by then he had convinced her of the right thing to do.

Ah yes, but Kathy thought that she was on a break...

It's more complicated than that. Since Activia's subject is "jealousy", you cannot properly discuss Kathy in that context without discussing why she slept with Nick. Chandler's jealousy started the spiral. He was so uncomfortable with Kathy's love scenes in the play that he jumped to the conclusion that she was sleeping with Nick. That was not true when he first made the assumption. She got so angry at him that she told him to call her when he grew up - and he retorted that it would be a long time before that happened. Then, of course, in a childish rage she went off and became guilty of doing what he had falsely accused her of. Chandler even realized that he had been part of the problem until Rachel convinced him that it was entirely Kathy's fault. (That figures.)

It was not entirely Kathy's fault. She committed the worst sin, and he had reason to call it a day, but Chandler contributed to that breakup.

Grin. Because Paget's contract was up and they had to write her out. :- )

Just one of the many abrupt "sympathetic SO suddenly develops serious and unforgiveable flaw" endings to storylines.

Yes, but dont forget this is justified in that Kathy had cheated before.

Chandler. She was with Chandler at the time. "but You're with me" She had broken up with Gary by the time they got back together.

~Act

abrahammyActivia

Actually, I'm with Tennant. I think Janice cheated on Gary. She and Chandler were committing adultery. Given Gary's behavior, her own infidelity is forgiveable, but Gary had the better claim to Janice's loyalty. I take the marriage oath very, very, very seriously, and tend to be harder on people who treat it lightly. That, among other things, is why I'm generally so hard on Emily; she did not behave as if she'd taken a marriage vow, and for the most part Ross did.

Randy Hindsabrahammy

claire abraham wrote:

Well, wait a minute. Didn't you give me grief several months ago about Ross not giving up on Emily, even after Emily had convinced everyone else here that she was asking for too much from Ross (aka not to see Rachel anymore)??? You seemed to indicate that what Emily was asking for was totally, un-equivocally absurd. I was thinking it was a little beyond reasonable, but doable, and that he should have given it a shot, despite the fact that she said she couldn't trust him. She could have learned to. .

Or did I miss something?

In all reality, even if Ross did agree to that and he and Emily did get back together, the "Rachel ban" would likely not be a "permanent" thing. In other words, when Ross is walking down the street and he sees Emily, must he close his eyes?

I think that after Ross had moved in with Emily and they were well on their way to raising a family or whatever, that visits to Monica would have been allowed, knowing that Rachel was there. . .

Just my opinion.

I speak only for myself --Randy
abrahammyRandy Hinds

Asking for him to give up his apartment and sell all his furniture was absurd. I actually agreed with his original intent to avoid Rachel, and think he'd have been happier if he had. If you'll find the quote where I gave you grief, maybe we can sort out what I meant. I am on record as saying I felt Ross owed it to Emily to try to honor his committment to her, and I agreed with his intention to avoid her. (Deja news will show you my debates with Lee on the subject.) On the other hand, I think Emily's behavior was absolutely as bad as it could possibly have been, and I blame her, not Ross, for the divorce. He really tried. She didn't. Not even one bit, and at the end she realized it and regretted her behavior.

I said a similar thing to Lee all those months before.

Randy Hindsabrahammy

claire abraham wrote:

Naw. It's not worth the effort to research. I was just razzin' you. I see what you're saying. I totally agree that Emily turned into a un-predictable witch during that whole mess. I think Ross tried hard also. But I think that just because Emily said "No" to the "Don't you trust me?" question posed by Ross, shouldn't be the end of a marriage. So she doesn't trust him now. . . You can always win back trust with some effort. Also, for Emily, learning to forgive is a key component to making a marriage work, IMO.

I speak only for myself --Randy

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Randy Hinds doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

I believe Ross probably saw that as the final straw; he'd been trying to win back her trust and forgiveness for almost two months by that point, and not only had she not budged even one iota, she'd raised the stakes along the way to a point where it would have been almost impossible for him to meet her demands unless he cut his sister out of his life completely. (Actually, these days it's debatable whether Monica would have even noticed if that had actually happened, but that's another matter...) She was determined not to forgive him or trust him, and personally I think to an extent she may have realised that she didn't love him anyway and was just stringing him along. When that happens in a relationship, there's only so much you can do before it's time to call it quits - and when Emily said that she didn't trust Ross in spite of all his efforts to bring her back, they'd reached that point.

A small observation: It's interesting that most of the major damage to all characters was done *after* this point. I wonder if this was when the big writers change-up happened?

Although Emily did have a coronary when Ross mentioned that Rachel was in the room when she called, but I had assumed (there's that word again . . ) that it was because it was sooooo early in the life of the "deal" they had brokered. She hadn't even arrived in NY yet. .

But you're right, she hadn't shown any signs of a change of heart regarding Ross. . .

I agree. The characters all went through major metamorphoses after that point . . . Interesting. . .

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Randy Hinds doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

Yeah, but the way Emily put it left absolutely no room for leeway - she was saying "Don't see Rachel anymore, no matter the cost". She wasn't going to compromise for the sake of him seeing his sister in the state she was in. I think Ross realised that, but probably assumed she'd loosen up - then realised that she wouldn't.

I think she was probably just mad because she was beginning to realise she couldn't control him, more than anything. There was a lot of underlying "You're not doing what I've told you to do" in that scene, well I thought so anyway.

And by that stage, I don't think she was going to.

<<They werent still married, they were divorced.>>

Actually, the divorce wasn't finalized at the time that Janice and Chandler started dating. Janice was in the *process of* divorcing her husband. So, technically, as much as I like Chandler, Janice *was* still legally married and cheating on her husband.

As a rule, in pairs. Whatever is either side of the pair should be able to make sense with the comma'd bit removed. e.g.

"I went to the shop and I bought some eggs, really big ones, and a loaf of bread." You can take ",really big ones," right out and leave yourself with "I went to the shop and I bought some eggs and a loaf of bread". No commas needed (because they lifted right out, remember?). When I read it on the internet its the same. But grammatically I guess you could guess taht the second one meant which shop sold eggs, and the other one says a show which sold eggs. Just a guess. It doesnt make a difference to me, you can tell by the context what they mean. One reason why I rarely catch other people's typos.

No, you shouldn't, you should use "which". You're determining (pointing out the difference) between shops (the one that sells eggs and the ones that don't), not explaining your reason for the journey. If you replace "sold eggs" with "was open" that would then read "I went to the shop which was open" or "I went to the shop, which was open". In the first you've explained that, of all the shops in the row of shops, you've picked the one that was open. "I went to the shop because it was open" indicates that you just had to go there because it had opened, perhaps the first day it was open? (Or that you are really really bored.) That would be a reason for your journey, not a reason for your choice of shop.

The second points out that you were going to go to the shop, for whatever reason, and it happened to be open. Again, because would not be appropriate.

"Which" would be grammatically correct, though.

Mind you, you probably *wouldn't* have heard anyone use it, in the circumstances. You *will* probably have heard people say "dove" (past tense of dive) and "gotten", both of which the UK appear to have completely dropped (although they're still grammatically ok). Language evolves and mutates. "Which" should still *not* be replaced by "that", but I think the meaning is still clear either way, and certainly in speech no one would pick you up on it. I'd still be surprised to see it in print in anything "respectable", though. :)

It's like learning a foreign language, you can get by but it takes a long time to get the idioms and nuances right. English English still retains a lot of nuances that American English has shucked.
