Has anyone ever noticed that while all six friends are in fact FRIENDS that there is someone out of the six that one of the others DON'T like (or like profoundly less than the rest). Ross and Phoebe are the least close and they seem to dislike more about each other!! Chandler and Rachel are the same way and so are Monica and Joey (to the lowest extent). It would take too much time and space for me to list all of the occations where I have seen them but heads, but their attitudes toward each other are not as nice as toward the others. Do you see this?

I have noticed that some friends feel closer than others. I see nothing unusual in it. It does get worse at times when the show needs a little conflict. Sometimes it has struck me that it is a bit contrived, but that's something common in situation comedies from time to time.

What makes you say that? Phoebe went to a great deal of trouble to help Ross in early Season 6, and he responded to that. He may have been much embarrassed when she asked three women to help, but he went along with her plan. That's not how people with low respect for each other behave.
Ross repaid Phoebe by giving her the bicycle she'd always wanted; and when she was afraid to ride it, he stood up to her arguments & won the debate. And it was Ross who must have moved heaven & earth to somehow find those exclusive concert tickets for Phoebe.
On both occasions she told Ross that she loved him, which is what she also told Rachel in 423 "TOW Ross's Wedding (part 1)", when she dared to reveal, "Before we get started, I just want to say for the record that I love Ross, I think he's such a great guy."
I'm sorry if I've gone on at you a bit, Sarah, but I'm afraid that there are way more examples that I could have quoted. :)

Grin. I wouldn't deny that Phoebe is sometimes disrespectful of Ross. She tends to be much nicer to him when the others aren't about, and even more so if Rachel isn't about. But she respects him more than the others do, which as far as his science & his music goes is not a lot.
Well, Phoebe is much harder on Chandler in public than she is on anyone else, but she did help him out with his career & his marriage. Rachel is easier on Chandler but less helpful, but we have seen them getting along quite well. And there's even a little chemistry between Monica & Joey.
The thing is Sarah, that these are six very good friends, where being less close is a relative term, and they feel at liberty to take quite a severe swipe at each other, without ever being too Seinfeldish.

They seem to understand each other a lot better (actually Phoebe understands Ross when no one else does) than anyone else. That would support the theory that Poebe is very smart just lacking education (and somewhat excentric) and Ross is very child-like.
Just imagine they all liked each other qually. I seriously would stop watching. And I really think in the case of friends it's not about some of them liking others less but about some of them liking others more or in a different way. But I can totally see where you are coming from. I just rewatched ALL episodes and there are not too many Rachel and Chandler scenes and the few there are are not really filled with love. ;-)

Well in the past I think that Chandler has been the one to shut himself out of real close relationships (friendships too). He has a hard time openning up to people and this is was makes him the least close to any of the friends that we have nsmed. They all also just get tired of his smart comments (albeit funny!) This is do to his troubled chilhood!

I don't think this is too unusual. In any group of people, some folks are closer to each other than they are to their other friends, and some folks rub each other the wrong way more often. I agree with Priya that Phoebe thinks less of Chandler than any other friend. (Phoebe has her good moments with Ross; she was the only one who understood his "sound".) Joey and Monica are not quite as close to each other as they are to the others, and Chandler is not as close to Rachel as some of the rest. This doesn't surprise me at all. It would surprise me if they did all get along with each other all the time.

A friend is someone you care about more than anyone else. A friend is someone who can piss you off more than everyone else.
Ross and Phoebe, for example; Ross being a scientist and Phoebe being -- well -- Phoebe, they butt heads a lot. I'm especially thinking of the episode (TOW?) where Phoebe thinks that her mother has been reincarnated as a cat; and Ross is shamed into going along with it. A lot of people dislike that scene, but I think it tells a really good point: that, Science aside, there's often a very good reason why people believe the things they do. And even though Phoebe's belief system may drive Ross crazy sometimes, he has to be supportive of her because he's her friend.
(There's also the episode where Ross gives Phoebe a bike, but he can't get her to learn to ride it. He finally has to "come down" to her level to get her to go along with it. Sort of turnabout, in a way.)
...And Joey and Chandler? C'mon, nobody is crueler to Joey than Chandler is. And probably, no two of the friends are closer than they are. A true friend will call you on it when you're being dumb; and even though it makes you angry, you have to listen, because they're your friend. How many of us have a friend we'd get in a box for?

The problem a lot of us have with that scene is that Ross did not tell Phoebe because she was annoying him; while he whined to his friends about it, he did not tell her himself while it was harmless. Ross told Phoebe because, and only because, her little delusion had *ceased* to be harmless. She wanted to keep a cat that didn't belong to her, and he tried telling her gently before he yelled at her about it being a cat. She demanded that he buy into her belief system in a particularly degrading and humiliating way before she would even talk about doing the right thing by the little girl who owned the cat. That stills stands for me as the single most offensive scene in the history of the show, and it's the only episode I simply refuse to watch. Sometimes a friend is somebody who isn't afraid to tell you you are doing something wrong. Phoebe was dead out of line.
Now, if Phoebe had just been sitting there pleasantly discussing her mother the cat and Ross had started yelling at her because he just couldn't stand it anymore, then he would have been wrong.
This differs from the evolution debate because Ross didn't have a compelling reason for badgering Phoebe about evolution. She rejected his position tactfully several times before she whacked him there. There, he deserved to get cut down a little bit because he was demanding that Phoebe agree with him when it really didn't matter whether she did or not. Here, he was trying to tell Phoebe that her beliefs were hurting somebody else.
When we originally discussed this episode back in season four, writer Michael Curtis told us that this particular problem bothered some of the members of the writing staff, too. It made the final cut because Kauffman shoved it down their collective throats, and she's the boss.

My problem with that whole ep was that the other four just let Ross look like the bad guy even though they all agreed that Phoebe had to give up the cat. And to make matters worse, Rachel suggested that Ross should apologize to the cat... Ross was taking initiative when the others chickened out and he got no support from anyone.

Hmmmmm... I admit I'm recalling the scene entirely from memory; I haven't seen that episode again since the first air. I'll be a sport and say I was wrong, since that happens so rarely it makes this a special occasion. ;o>
Still, I love the scene where Ross sells Phoebe on the bike. Considering how seriously Ross takes his profession, it must have really gone against his grain to say stuff like "the bike will die." But he cared enough about Phoebe's happiness to suck it up (to use his expression). I thought that was very touching.
