Friends last season?

Hi I was wondering, i just heard this, is it true that the upcoming season will be friends' last season? thanx

Most likely the upcoming season (8) will be the last. No contract renewals have been signed.

Yes but don't you think that rides heavily on how season 8 is going to pan out. Lets not forget the actors being roped in yet again. But I can't see why they wouldn't want to sign. They've had very little success outside of Friends (except CCA with Scream trilogy).

In real life, though, during any season9 there could be three pregnant actresses - really awkward if the show is being written around Aniston's fictional pregnancy during s8.

I'm betting that this is it, and also that the ratings will fall enough this year that although cancellation won't be considered a "mercy killing", most people will figure that this is a good time to quit.

Well, yes. They've had a good run, but now the desperation factor has kicked in. This was most obvious to me when an episode was centered around a kiss long ago between Rachel and her former college friend - there are still many good episodes, and some laughs in most episodes, but they've jumped the shark.

This is all subjective, needless to say. For me, once good episodes are in the minority and the show feels tedious, then it may be time to call it a day. I'm not ready to stop watching. However, if Thursday turns out to be cluttered with other stuff that I'd prefer, then Friends has now hit the category of something to watch during reruns. (With three VCRs, chances are that it will be taped.)

That would be a business decision. Given the enormous salaries of the Friends stars, other sitcoms are surely cheaper. If the ratings fall off so that the hammock effect isn't even working, then I can see a cancellation. That's a big IF, though. I've read that last season's ratings stayed much the same as the previous year even though it wasn't obvious - i.e., viewers didn't migrate to Survivor from Friends, but, rather, additional people turned on their TV sets.

I'd be very happy if they were able to jump-start the show again. Really, though, I don't see Rachel's pregnancy as the key. (I'm trying to remember any fading sitcom that has ever been rescussitated via a new element being brought in - surely there must be one or two.)

Am I the only person that thought Season 7 was brilliant, I couldn't stop laughing from the first episode in the series to the last, the only time I did stop was at the wedding. They should keep this brilliant program going for as long as possible.

I agree. I think season 7 has had some great moments..only a few so-so episodes in it. Yes the show has changed, but who says that's always a bad thing?

Exactly. While "Friends" was by no means faltering at that point,the Monica-Chandler plot line was a real revitalizing point for the series. Interestingly enough, some people see this as the point where teh show "jumped the shark" but I see it as one of te best moves the writers and producers could have made. Where many other "friends turned lovers" plots have failed miserably, they pulled this one off perfectly with a nice mix of humor thrown in about it. Truly the wrtiers on this show are some of the most talented.

With no disrespect whatsoever meant, you can't really expect that to really influence many American viewers, who are going to like what is popular in their own country regardless of whether or not it is popular in others. For example, I'm sure you and many other British citizens could care less that bands like Blur and Oasis have only met here with limited sucess while staying on top of the game in the U.K. For me to say, "you don't understand how important Radiohead is because they're the only U.K. based band that has had a number one album in America since 1997" is culturally egocentric (though considering that most Americans are culturally egocentric anyway, I can see you making a point that you have the right to do the same). Again, this comment is meant in the most respectful manner, and I know how flustered Europeans can get over American arrogance so I hope this doesn't come across in that manner.

hope so. While I have always enjoyed the show, this season has been to weird and usually when a show gets weird, it's over.

Perfect example - Roseanne - she wins the lottery and divorces Dan and goes on a wild world tour, spending spree - just too odd..

Also regarding Friends popularity in the UK and Europe, I noticed this as soon as I found out that you lucky bastards have all seven seasons avilable on VHS over there, whereas in the U.S. all we have is a "best of" ten episode set. Talk about injustice.
