The only decent episode this season was TOW The Videotape. I have been very dissapointed with this season, especially Phoebe, who doesn't seem to be going anywhere and is acting very immaturely, and Ross, who's acted like a complete jerk. I've also been sick of the number of C&M storylines, the only real highlight has been the evolution of Joey.

Couldn't agree more with you, as far as disliking this season goes. Although I kind of liked 802 and 803 as well and thought 817 had some hilarious scenes... I also agree that they have hardly had any decent stories for Monica, Chandler and Phoebe and Ross came off as a big time idiot in too many episodes (I'm beginning to believe that they had to have Ross look like a complete idiot in 811 in order for 812 to work as well as it did...). It's like the show is only about the "who with whom" and not about comedy anymore. Let's hope they use those 7 episodes they have left this season to provide some comedy, though with the birth coming up, that doesn't seem likely, does it?

I'm sure there have been a few more funny storylines which I can't remember! But everything seems to have gone downhill. In 816, Pheobe lost all credability when she acted totally irrisponsably by setting up Monica and "the cheese guy". The other thing is thatt the writers don't seem to have any respect for Ross's character, he just ends up playing "unfortunate Ross" all the time, they seem to think it's funny. Friends just isn't as dynamic and eye catching as it was, and I can't see much changing... :(

Frankly as I watched season 7 again I find it to be much better than season 8. The writers have been sloppy and lazy and Friends got off easy this season. 11 Sept had killed reality tv and there's hardly any show out there that can offer Friends any competition this time around. The networks are relying on their winning stable of writers/producers who have delivered them hits previously and stars to bring in the ratings and that formula does not seem to be working.
Friends is all by itself at the top and I wonder if they can maintain the momentum and go out on top in season nine. Stiff competition could change all that.

Yes, we need some decent competition. I didn't like season 7 that much, but 8 is rubbing me up the wrong way. I can't put my finger on it, but it seems to me like a completely different show. It's just the way it feels, maybe it's because it's not as funny. What happened to the clever writing? What happened to the dynamic chemistry. Friends is like a flat bottle of lemonade. The jokes are sloppy and nonsensical and Chandler must have had some sort of mid-life crisis, because he's not the same person, he's boring! The ratings show nothing for the show's quality, merely how easily won over Americans are by soap-style storylines. Friends needs a kick up the arse. Now!

I think that season 7 may take on a bit of a cult status. It's really an atmospheric season. They didn't seem afraid to test gay waters with the Joey/Ross storylines, or having Jennifer kiss another woman. Jennifer's dramatic haircut during the season really caught some eyes. I somewhat agree that the terrorist attacks really got people wanting to escape reality, and back into this show. But the acting this season has been classy and believable, and that's what kept people tuned in.
If they leave themselves enough of a pathway to go in any direction with any storyline, then people will continue to tune in not knowing what to expect. If it starts getting predictable in the 9th season on where everything is heading, people will start to lose interest.
It IS a different show from the first 7 seasons, but there's nothing wrong with that. To keep it fresh, you have to change up the format after awhile. The old one was starting to wear thin in the 6th and 7th seasons, and the ratings reflected that.
TOW The Videotape, Joey Dates Rachel, Secret Closet were clever episodes. How many episodes in the past couple of seasons before this season can you really call clever?

As much as I love foreigners' penchant for stereotyping Americans, I disagree totally with that statement. Ross and Rachel was as much a soap opera in the first couple of seasons as Joey and Rachel is today. You can't have love be penetrating without drama, pain, etc. It's how they handle the off moments is what really matters, and for the most part those have really been lacking, but the main storyline this season is as intrguing as the others before it.
If Americans "love" soaps so much, then why do daytime soaps continue to have such low ratings here, and that there is currently not a single soap on in prime time, unlike in the UK?

Rating show nothing, people get bored easily. The reason the ratings got thin was because S6 and S7 were so awful. I know you must keep things fresh, but why change the formula, when the one you have is so good. The other thing is that I think the show changed a lot after C&M got together, I think there was a major change in writing staff at that time.
The plotlines in those episodes were good, but they weren't accompanied by clever humour. If you want to watch a clever episodes, watch TOW Everyone finds out.

I know I shouldn't sterotype Americans, because we're all obessed with soaps. It's just that the American viewing figures are out *now*. I'd like to think that Friends became popular because it was so funny, not because of Ross and Rachel. If otherwise, I think it's very sad that we only want to watch people braking up/fighting/having affairs/generally falling out. Chandler sums it up very well in an early S1 episode when he says sarcastically: "I think this is the episode of Three's Company where there's some kind of misunderstanding"
I was just using the American viewing figures as an example. A reason I'd put for your soap ratings being so low is that you have so many of them. In the UK, we only have about five main soaps. Also, just look at the American/British obsession with reality TV.
Okay, here's my list.
Just a quick pick. I am disappointed with the lever humor this season too but atleast the drama is being done tastefully.

Well, I'd start with 801, followed by 802 -- just like NBC did. ;-)
I'm only sure about the top and bottom three, the rest were more a less thrown together by remembering the storylines, not the jokes or playing. Actually I love parts of some lower listed episodes, but the other plots make it bad. What I read about 818 and 822 sound *very* promising to me, also part of 821.
