I just thought of this. Has anyone else noticed that in the 7+ years that friends has been on TV that we have yet to see an elavator in their building. We continualy see them walking up the stairs. But No Elevator!!!! I wonder what floor their apartments are on. They show the builing from the outside and it is pretty tall. So where are the elavators. WHAT IS THAT ABOUT!!!

There was a neighbor below them who didn't have cats. ("I could have cats.") Plus they always look down from the balcony. So, they aren't on the ground floor.
Joey spotted a pretty woman in the building where Ross now lives. Doesn't he count floors while pointing with his finger? That might be a clue. By the way, Ross lives at least one floor lower because he always looks up at them, and they look down on him. (no pun intended.)
I get the impression that they are on about the third floor, maybe fourth. They don't seem too winded coming up the stairs so I doubt they are above four.
By the way, the 5-story walk-up was the standard before the invention of the elevator. That doesn't mean it couldn't be higher, it just isn't likely if there is no elevator. The shots of the building look like about nine, or maybe 10 floors--somewhere in there.
What if the elevator is on the other side of the building? Maybe they prefer to use the side entrance because. . . oh. . . it's closer to Central Perk. Yeah, that's it! I like that answer best.
So, they live on the fourth floor of a building that has an elevator, but they don't use it. Problem solved.
I can't believe I just typed for ten minutes about what floor the show's main apartments are on. Plus I just ended that sentence with a preposition. Mr. Syntax, Joey Tribiani would have a fit. ("Whom. . . . "That's right." )

Not many of the buildings in the area have an elevator. They probably only do if there are more than 6 stories. I believe that building has 5. In fact, many apartments down in that area don't even have full bathrooms. Many have tubs or showers in the kitchen or bedroom (our shower was in the kitchen). And the toilet is in a tiny closet with no sink.
