. . Um . . . I was SO surprised that the ad for tonight's episode was actually what happened! No bait and switch tactics, just a genuine spoiler for the end of the episode.
Of course, Ross is going to get all whimpy about it, and miss the chance to nip it in the bud. So, we will have to endure another 20+ episodes before anything gets decided. And maybe they will do a cliff-hanger in May that will NOT decide the deal either.

Would be nice to know whether the show was written before the writers knew there was a good chance for a tenth season.
I wish I had that POV, too, because I'd be positively surprised if it wasn't to happen.
Don't try to predict the season finale before you've seen the spring sweeps episodes. OTOH in the past it was quite successful to predict a cliffhanger involving R&R.

It is getting ever so annoying, isn't it? The worst part is, apart from that bit at the end, this was a very enjoyable episode, Chandler playing with the helium balloons, Joey showing just how much of a "gentleman" he is and how Mike got Phoebe to get rid of the rats. Then they have to bring in this lame old plot device again :( And it's especially bad this time, since 909 made it look as though they might go for a different approach

Yeah, that's something that has always amused me. Since they broke up, the only relationship Rachel has been in that lasted at least for a little while was with Tag (that whole Joshua thing never got anywhere imho), while Ross dated Bonnie, got married to Emily, dated that student girl, and last but not least there was Mona. And if we count everyone they've dated, Ross's list would be like 5 pages, while Rachel's list would probably be just a about a page.
