TOW the Invitation

This was on our tv last night, in the UK. It was the one where Ross debates if he should send Rachel and invite to the wedding with Emily. There was a lot of very funny flashbacks at previous episodes. Anyway, I have 2 questions: - 1) Why was Rachel wearing that striped plaster across her forehead when Ross introduced Julie to the group? 2) Why did Joey say "Well hello Mr Cotter" to Ross when he seen the prom video? Sorry if they have been asked before but I am just curious!!

She fell at the airport (remember her using the flowers to stop the bleeding?). The plaster must have been applied somewhere between the airport and Monica's front door!

US TV show - Welcome Back Kotter. I'm guessing the moustache he had made him look like someone from it (I've never seen the show but one of the USians on here can confirm this, no doubt!)

It wasn't plaster it was a bandaid. When she seen Ross walk out with Julie she was trying to get away before they seen her and in her haste she fell and cut her head.

This refers to a popular show called "Welcome Back, Kotter" (1975-1979). Mr. Kotter was a teacher in an inner city high school. With the small afro and mustache Ross looked alot like Gabe Kaplan(the actor that played Mr. Kotter and the creator of the show). This show also starred John Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino. The only reason I added that is I LOVE John Travolta!

To a Brit (see the UK bit there?) that's a plaster. Band-Aid was a trademark, that the US use as a generic now, like you also use kleenex etc. We never really had that brand as a market leader for years (although now it's one of them), so we use 'plaster'. The thing that you put on broken limbs is Plaster of Paris, although we would say "he had his leg in plaster". There's a subtle difference between being in plaster and wearing a plaster. Being plastered, of course, is being pissed, which is NOT being cross (mad is insane, cross is angry) but being drunk. HTH. :)

I have plasters with Winnie the Pooh on them. You can buy them in all sorts of shapes and sizes and designs. No doubt Rachel wanted sparkly ones.

Interesting. We would say "he had his leg in a cast" rather than a plaster. If I remember correctly, wasn't Plaster of Paris something one played with as a kid in art class? Although we also say "he was plastered" when referring to drunk. . . .
