Pilot Episode: MAJOR Plot Continuity Error

Happy New Year and greetings all after a while away from the group.

Received the "Best of" 2-DVD set for Christmas :-) . We were watching the pilot episode and encountered a huge faux pas by the writers:

The gang is in Central Perk, Ross comes in with his first forlorn "Hi," and they proceed to talk about his situation. It's clear from the exchange that Ross' parents KNOW about the divorce and about Carol's declaration of being a lesbian.

However, wasn't there an episode later in season one that had Ross explaining to his parents what happened, as if he had never told them?

It's one thing to screw up continuity error in a detail from years back, but there was only a few months difference between the pilot and the episode where Ross tells his parents (again!).

That was one of the "deleted" scenes. Thus, I don't think you can technically say it was a continuity error.

The standard version is the one first aired on NBC, 22 minutes long, and as transcribed in thecfsi.com by Eric Aasen & others.

The syndication version tends to be much shorter in the US, since they show more adverts, but we're not talking about those cuts.

The original version is the one the director & producers create, which is timed to see what must be edited out to suit NBC's transmission time, and can be anything from 24 to 29 minutes long. It's these deleted scenes we are talking about, anything from the fun stuff like Ross naked with Ugly Naked Guy to missing plot points like the faded letter on Ross's face.

Thanks Tennant, I wish I could have seen this scene "It's our friend, it's naked Ross!" What about the DVD ? they must be the "standard version" ?

The DVDs we have in Europe are the standard version, except for the pilot episode which is the original version. If the American box set is a big success, that might encourage Warner Bros to relaunch the whole series.

It's worth remembering that DVDs have a better resale value, since they are not deteriorated by being played, unlike tapes. Both discs & tapes can be damaged, but you can check a whole disc at one glance.

Yep. We have to face up to the fact that extra lines & scenes are not canon. We can happily talk about them for pleasure, we can even use them when they shed light on stuff we wonder about, but if they cause any conflicts then tough luck.

This is all quite true, but it's not a continuity error since the later episode was written on the basis of the offending line being cut out.
