I saw the first episode of the "new" Survivor series last night after the Superbowl, and all I can say is "been there, done that." The first series was exciting but this second one is just more of the same. Without the element of originality, it's not very interesting. By all this I mean,
"FRIENDS WILL KICK SURVIVOR'S A**!!"

I agree. Not because I'm a friends fan and I hate what CBS did. I saw the last 5 minutes and thought I was watching the 1st survivor again. I thought the new group looked identical to the first one, and thought that the producers were trying to recreate the same episodes.
And did you notice how the castaways were acting so phony? Especially 2 of the girls who looked like they were crying when the 45-year old cradle robber got kicked off. Whatever. such a hammy performance. Talk about playing up to the camera. This show's dead.

Or maybe put Friends on a night where there is absolutely NOTHING good to watch - Friday. This is not meant as an insult to Friends, it's just Friday's suck! They need something to liven them up. Even if Friends isn't beating Survivor they are still getting 20+ million viewers a week. That's good enough for the #1 comedy in the US.
How does Neilden handle it if you tape one and watch the other? Personally, i tape "Friends" because I might want to see it again. Survivor I will watch one time only.

The USA Today TV critic, Robert Bianco, answered that recently. He said that the Neilsen people do have a method for counting how many viewers are recording a program, but the numbers aren't added into the ratings tallies.
Advertisers are well aware that Friends has much greater drawing power in reruns than Survivor does. Friends finished 5th overall this week, with 22.4 million viewers (last week, 22.2 million). Survivor was 1st with about 29 million, then ER, then Sunday's Millionnaire (with rock star celebrities) and The Practice (a baby was born). Friends is still 5th overall in the season's standings, still the # 1 sitcom over ELR.
March 1 (after sweeps is over), NBC is scheduled to air 706 and 707 at 8 and 8:30.

It looks like NBC will air 705 on March 8, followed by an episode of Just Shoot Me. I expect less than stellar ratings for the hour on that night :-(.
In March, CBS will air Survivor on Wednesday for two nights when they have NCAA college basketball games scheduled for Thursday. I think the dates are March 15 and 22, but I am not certain. No word from NBC as to whether they will air new eps of Friends on those nights, or whether they will stockpile them for direct competition against Survivor.
Also, I have read about four different reports on the ratings from last night (2/15), and each has a different take on the results. Some say Friends beat Survivor from 8 to 8:30 with 23 million viewers and that the outtakes got even bigger ratings (but the Survivor audience grew from 8:30 to 9 as per usual), some say that Friends had fewer viewers than last week. I guess we'll have to wait until Monday to see what Variety and the Hollywood Reporter have to say to find out the real story.

Yah, but since Nielsen Media Research ignore home taping, they undervalue any show with episodes worth watching more than once, or keeping.

Yep. But for the commercial sponsers, the chance that someone will actually watch their ad is much greater with a live viewing than when someone watches a tape. I know I FF through all ads when I watch a taped program. And there is no guarantee that the tape will actually be watched.

Ah - but with live viewing people nip to the loo or pop out to make some tea. This is made easy to do in Britain since we get promos at the end of the commercial break, so you can hear from afar when the show is about to resume. When FFing the tape, you stare intently at the screen watching those flickering images bypassing the conscious mind just like illegal subliminal advertising.

My VCR lets me FF at 1 minute intervals, so 2 clicks and I'm back to the show.
There is an irritating trend in advertising lately to get so artsy with commercials that by the end, you still have no idea what the commercial is for. But there are still the good old jingles, like the new one my 2 1/2 year old was dancing around the family room to last night- it was for Viagra, of all things!

As a Nielsen Media Research employee, we ask for you to write down in a little diary what you are only ACTUALLY watching. If you are taping Friends (as I do every week) you could note that in the diary, but we are only intersted in what you are ACTUALLY watching. Unless of course you have a Meter Box in your house. Then a field rep destroys your walls and basement trying to meter your home.
