Another theory no one seems to have thought about is...

. Maybe it's Phoebe who is pregnant. She's just ditzy enough that she might not have made the connection between finding the pregnancy kit and realizing it was the same one she herself used. If it were Rachel, it's hard to understand Rachel playing along so well when Phoebe found the kit.

Maybe Phoebe's brother decided to have another kid and Phoebe agreed to do the surrogate thing again. Of course that would be their fourth kid, so it's not likely, but he and his wife were just weird enough that they might want another. Also, the woman married to Phoebe's brother is now on That 70s Show...

The other reason I have a hard time thinking it's Rachel is that I tend to agree with the theory that she and Ross will eventually get back together, even if it is on the very last show. I can't see a pregnancy working into this. If Ross is the father, then that tends to cheapen the ultimate reunion of the two of them, and it also doesn't make any sense since they have not referred to being together at all and Ross in particular would not be able to hide the fact that they had been together. As for Joey, it is believable that they could do it and even have a relationship, but having a baby together would really put a barrier to any eventual reunion with Ross. For me, a Rachel pregnancy with anyone but Ross as the father is a sign that Ross and Rachel will never get back together...

Another piece of evidence about Rachel -- I'm thinking that perhaps she took the test the night before, emptied the trash, but it got stuck or something. After all, why on earth is Rachel emptying Monica's trash? Would there be any reason for her to do this aside from getting rid of the test? That didn't make a lot of sense to me. Also, could make her initial surprised reaction more believable: "Wait! I just emptied that last night! Monica must have taken it this morning!" And then she realizes....

Hmmm. I have to say that as believable as a Phoebe-pregnancy would be, I don't think it's the case....

Not necessarily. It could be Rachel had a fling with a stranger (cameo by Brad Pitt) but he dumps her, and Ross being the gentleman that he is, comforted her and their love grew again. Whole seasons could be devoted to how their love rekindle. I don't think Rachel having a baby that is not Ross' is a big deal since Ross himself has a son and she never had any problem anyway.

Well, just listen to real life news to see if JA or CCA is pregnant.

There's also a nice "coming full circle" moment here. When Ross was dealing with his ex-wife's pregnancy, Rachel was there for him. Now, Ross can be there for her. Also, the one night stand guy provides a legitimate obstacle later in the season (ya know, he wants to be with Rachel in order to raise the kid together). Ultimately, Ross and Rachel will get back together, but still a lot of tension along the way.
