What's Reese Witherspoon doing on ''Friends'' Thursday night? Other than playing Rachel's spoiled sister who makes a play for Ross (she also appears in next week's episode), she's kicking off February sweeps, the ratings period when shows parade out their highest-profile guest stars to stop channel surfers mid-switch. The part of Jennifer Aniston's sis wasn't necessarily written for a star, but when Witherspoon said she was interested -- ta da! -- instant sweeps stunt! ''We were obviously big fans of her,'' says ''Friends'' cocreator and executive producer David Crane. ''Anybody who saw her in 'Election' would just say, 'Oh my God, yes, get her!''' Plus, the jealousy this familial flirtation with Ross arouses in Rachel rekindles ''Friends'' fans' undying hope that the couple will reunite, although the creators aren't giving anything away. since she publicly stated this, my guess is................they're gonna keep these two together til the VERY END. They want to keep attracting viewers, even if they're not too happy with the way the stories are going.

Nah... to me it basically indicates they're trying to keep something under wraps. Whenever Kauffman and Crane do an interview which refers to the latest R&R plot twist, they usually *at least* drop a hint to indicate where it's going. They didn't this time - they kept completely mum, which is even more surprising considering that they must *know* the spoiler for 614 is all over the web. It may be me reading too much into it, but that tells me something's up that they don't want us to know about.
