wouldn't this be a great season finale? ross and rachel start to kiss in CP mon and chan break up joey and phoebe are trapped in joey's place when a fire breaks out what do you think? owen

No, actually, to be a good cliffhanger, it needs to end on a troubled note. Every single good cliffhanger we've had depends on some concern or worry.

Ross has a new girlfriend in Rachel's way... Phoebe's mother is alive after abandoning her... Ross says Rachel, not Emily... Ross and Rachel's marriage is a drunken sham...

I'd amend this to have Ross and Rachel sharing a kiss in Central Perk as Monica and Chandler have a very nasty fight where it *looks* like they are going to break up - and that's the cliffhanger. Will they?

But something to remember is that WB apparently *still* haven't approached a single cast member about renewing their contract - which at this stage is very worrying. So if that happens and the show doesn't come back next season, it's going to absolutely suck for everyone concerned.

The season finales are written and shot in either March or early April (I think). The way I see it, if the contracts have not been hammered out by then, BK&C will write a Very Special Season Finale directed by James Burrows that can double as a final episode if need be. Newsradio and Homicide did that every season. I'm not exactly worried, though. NBC shells out $13 million per ER episode, so they are not going to want to mess up something that will screw their lead-in shows and fall to "Millionaire" in the ratings every week. Also, if Warner Bros. has enough money to buy out EMI records, they have enough to keep Friends on the air. Before the show does end, I would like to see (either in a flashback or a detailed description) how Phoebe wound up as Monica's roommate.

A matter of some debate here. I didn't enjoy them painting Monica as not only a thief, but a chronic thief, and I'm glad they've veered away from that. It was not a good joke.

Nope. The only good thing about the sweater joke was when Monica stuck it under her shirt and started getting broody.

I dunno - maybe there is a longer version where we saw Chandler exchange a look with a shop assistant holding some money, for he had already bought the sweater, and he was giving straight-laced Monica a thrill.

I had a very personal reason for latching onto this incident however, for I'd had the *real* ending revealed to me unwillingly, and as I watched the shoplifting scene, it raised my hopes that the season finale had not been cruelly spoilt for me after all. :-(

Why do they think that every season has to be a cliffhanger?  Sometimes it
works.....like the first season, when Rachel saw Ross and Julie together at
the airport.  Sometimes they're contrived, like the end of the third season,
when Ross was torn between which door to open.....only to disappoint us at
the start of the next season.
   Up until, what 1994 or 1995, sitcoms found a way to end the season
without cooking up some sort of cliffhanger.  Do they assume we must miss
"Dallas" or "Dynasty" that much?  And even then, only one or two of those
cliffhangers were memorable, like who shot JR?
   Can you imagine if "All in the Family" felt the need to end each season
with a cliffhanger?
   Or "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."  "Okay, that's your final answer?
Find out if it's correct on night 112 of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'
next September!!"

The staff tried to end without a cliffhanger at the end of the second season. MNL did not like the result.

Yes, but I would be highly suspicious of the writer's motives if it ended on that note. Too often have they pulled the rug out from under our feet come the beginning of the next season.

While I could see them becoming a couple, I can't see them being funny as one. They're too similar and don't seem to see any shortcomings in each other. Therefor I'm not interested in their potential relationship as far as the sit-com goes.

I dont think that would be great either Ohen. I agree that if Monica and Chandler broke up it would be really devasting for all the friends and ruin the show. Plus I think Monica and Chandler are really cute together. Ross and Rachael have been in so many story lines but they keep breaking up again..maybe for a reason

It would be difficult from a writing standpoint. After all R&R already went down this path. So it cant be about another woman. It cant be about babies cause monica already did that with richard. It cant be about commitment cause chandler has already done a boatload of commitment episodes and hes pretty well past all that. Past relationships? Doubtful. Monica's most significant past relationship was buried last season as a contender. Pete might return but in a very pummeled and bloody state. Janice? I dont think so. The only possible threat might be kathy, and that's dubious. Of course it could be a stupid sudden breakup like phoebe and gary for shooting that bird. The only other conceivable breakup material would be for chandler's company to move him or for monica to get an opportunity somewhere else to be a chef and the other person cant leave. Like i said, difficult.

Ross and rachel getting back together? Who knows. its really an exercise in futility for both of them. Ross should of stuck with Julie, Rachel should of made things work with joshua. Then they'd have happy albeit boring lives

No offense to you but I think that would be a horrible season finale. Monica and Chandler breaking up? No way.. Then followed by R&R kissing, that would add fuel to the fire of the R&R vs. C&M thing. I think it would just end on a sour note that way. And the fire thing..WHY?? I don't like to think of Phoebe and Joey being in danger for no reason except to say that it was some kind of stunt for the finale.
