I honestly hope this hasn't been asked before, but I would like to know 1)What religion is each of the characters and 2)What religion are each of the actors/actresses? (If you know which branch of christianity, please post that of just Christian!)
Mon and Ross are Jewish it's thought that Rach could be Jewish, but we don't know for sure. Joey's Catholic, Phoebs, is a mystery. And I'd say Chandler is somewhere in Christianity, but who knows?
People have been trying to pin the Gellers down as either/or, and I just don't get why. I think it's been established that Monica and Ross celebrate both Hanukah and Christmas. My supposition is that Jack is Jewish, Judy is not. I've thought that ever since TOW Nana Died Twice, when Judy spoke about serving ham at her mother's funeral reception.

Depends on how you mean "celebrate." A lot of people buy Christmas trees, exchange presents and sing carols without believing in Christ. Are they Christians?
The Gellers (or at least R&M) might simply be blending in with their goyim friends, without adopting Christian beliefs. My bet is that R&M are Jewish.
Why?
We have no evidence to the contrary.
Joey, obviously, was raised Catholic, though I think I am safe in saying he's somewhat lapsed in his faith.
Phoebe -- the best we could do in titling her beliefs is the Salad-Bar System: take what you like from the available and leave the rest. Exchange/revise as needed.
Rachel wears a Star of David pendant in the first third of 313 "TOW Monica and Richard Are Just Friends". Then in the season finale, Monica can be seen wearing it just before Mr.Bowmont arrives at Central Perk.
Sorry but that doesn't mean anything because I have a Star of David charm and a cross charm on my necklace that I wear all the time and I'm not Jewish or Christian.
I was going to say the same thing! That symbol has been used countless times outside of the Jewish faith. Though you may not agree with me, I would think that if Monica is Jewish, it would definately have come up in the C+M relationship. I doubt the wedding will be Jewish either, which may help with the facts. I'm still trying to decide if people are considering them Jewish just because they are white with black hair. If this is the case, which I hope it is not, I just have to say that I know lots of people that are white with black hair that are Catholic and Protestant with Dutch, English, Scottish, and German background, which reminds me, who is to say that Jack Gellar isn't of a Scottish background?
The Gellers (not Gellars) celebrate Hanukkah. Very few Catholics and Protestants join in with Jewish festivals. Note that the Christmas tree has a lot more to do with pagan tree worship than Christianity, while all the feasting at the winter solstice is basically Saturnalia.
In 410 "TOW the Girl from Poughkeepsie", Phoebe wished Chandler & Monica a happy Hanukkah (in a song) but Chandler objected that he wasn't Jewish.
Yes, and didn't Ross say something like "I was going to get her something for Hanukkah. . . . " about Monica in one of the episodes? That would seem to support the claim that Ross and Monica are more Jewish than anything. . . .
No. Conclusive evidence of Geller Jewish background lies in that Ross and Monica are *known* to celebrate Hannukah. Ross gives Monica presents during it. In one other December episode, Ross can be seen polishing what is unquestionably a menorah. The Gellers do not necessarily keep kosher, and I doubt they are orthodox, but their background is subtley referred to frequently. However, as *none* of these characters seem to be particularly devout anything, I suspect there are two reasons why Jewishness has not yet been shown to affect Chandler and Monica.
1. Until now, their affair has not been serious enough to make religion a big consideration. 2. Theology is not important to the Friends writers. We could assume that any discussion of how her beliefs and customs affect him is handled in the great majority of their fictional experiences that we don't see.
You've seen TOW the blackout right? Joey used his ex roomate's menorah to light the room. I think I remeber Ross making a joke about it. It's a candleholder with one in the middle higher than the ones on the sides.
That's the best way I can describe it visually..maybe a person w/ more familiarity could provide a better explanation.
====== es*o*ter*ic b : of or relating to knowledge that is restricted to a small group
A menorah is used in that episode, but actually, I was thinking of another. It was a Christmastime episode and the fact that he had a menorah in his hand had nothing whatsoever to do with anything. It was just a small detail for the quick of eye to catch. The Script Index probably wouldn't even catch it.
I've now had a chance to go through the DVDs, and it's the beginning of 209 "TOW Phoebe's Dad". It's smaller menorah than the previous one, and more silvery. Ross is seen assembling it with a screwdriver.

Actually, I think only the last one can be used as "proof" that the Gellers are jewish - the other two just shows that Ross is familiar with the concept of Hanukkah. :-) Has anyone dragged in Ross wedding to Emily into this tread yet? Well, I think that IF the writers meant him and Monica to be practizing Jews, wouldn't he have a (religous) problem with getting married in a church? My guess is that they are from a mixed Christian/Jewish background and celebrate holidays from both religions. (I'm not the first one suggesting this, I know.)
I think one can do the interpretation that Ross only wished Mr Treeger a Happy Hanukkah to get another chance to try and bribe him/give him his Christmas money.
and
I (non-jewish) knew. ;-) And I'm not discussing "most Christians" here, I discuss a character who MIGHT have a Jewish father and himself celebrate some of the jewish holidays.
Is it probable that Judy Geller is SO un-orthodox and SO not strongly religious that she serves ham at her mothers funeral, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to think that she migth in fact, be Christian?
I still think that there are two possible answers to the question "which religion does Ross and Monica belong to?" You might not. I can live with that.
That's a fair point, but doesn't answer the question about Ross & Monica.
I'm not really fussed either, just debating a trivial point about the background to a situation comedy, but for me the real clincher comes in 408 "TOW Chandler in a Box" where Ross says that he has already bought Monica something for Hanukkah.
WHAT???? You think all jewish people are white with black hair? There are many jewish people who are not white at all, and as for the black hair thing, many of my friends are blonds, brunettes, red-headed - whatever .....
Little remark: It's not "Bowmont", it's "Beaumont". It's French and it's a common last name in France. And the letter -n and the letter -t are silent, i.e. not pronounced. The -mont part is pronounced like you would pronounce MONTreal, but leaving out the -n and the -t when pronouncing.
PS: I'm sure everyone in the forum will be absolutely fascinated by this piece of information. :-))
I thought it was pronounced "bow-MONT". What do you mean the "n" and the "t" are silent? That would mean it would be pronounced "bow-MAH". Is this what you're saying? (not being sarcastic, just asking. . . )
I don't know how you pronounce Montreal, but I pronounce it "MON-tree-all", with both the "n" and the "t" taking a very big stand in the pronounciation of the word.
Randy, I know where you're coming from but it's practicaly impossible to *explain* the pronunciation any other way. And the way Americans pronounce Montreal is *not* correct. You guys just take the word and "Englishify" it. It's very funny how the English-speaking do that, for instance also with words like mnage--trois, dbcle, coup d'tat, dj-vu, etc. I know, The French "-ont" sound must be [to the English- speaking] a very awkward sound uncomparable to an English word. Think of the English expression "Huh?" but replace the "u" with an "o", thus "Hoh?", then leave out the "h" (you'll feel silly trying it, but try it anyway :)). I thought very hard of an English word containing a similar sound, but could not think of one. I personally live in Belgium. In the northern part which is the Dutchspeaking part, but I know French too (southern part of Belgium). I know, we have some weird sounds. Remember "Marga"...:-) Randy, the best way you can understand is to talk to someone you know who knows French and make him or her read the word "Beaumont" out loud...
Actually, some private emails set me straight(er).
So are these correct?
menAJH-eh-twah?
de-BAH-kl ?
koo-de-tah ??
day-jha -voo ?
Hmm. That is tough. I get the feeling it's sort of like a hickup right at the end of the word. "Bow-mo<hickup>". Or like you just abruptly stopped saying the word when you get to the "-nt". (My office-mate is wonder what in the world I'm trying to do over here!)
Actually, the one word that strikes me as *very* englishified is "Montague", as in the Montague Expressway in San Jose, California (when I was there for a summer). I kept asking for directions to the "Mon-tag" Expressway, and FINALLY somebody said "ohhhhh, you mean "Mon-ta-gew"!!.
Seems most every other word in English I can think of, we don't pronounce the -gue as "gew". Oh well, I supposed everyone then knew I was from out-of-town. . .
P.S. Oh yes, and if anyone is ever in Vail for skiing, the pronounciation of "Roger's Run" is "Row-jhairs Run". Kinda sounds like "rose-hairs", with a little bit of a soft "g" sound added.
This whole debate on French pronunciation (something the English don't have too much trouble with, actually) has been fascinating, except that since Beaumont has been an English surname since 1086 (Domesday Book), it has been pronounced bow-mont with a definite t for centuries. Who's to say Mr Bowmont isn't from New Glockenshire or perhaps a real place like London?
Jac, sorry to dull an interesting debate with facts. Those of you who like to ignore such things can carry on doing so.
I *really* think the writers had the French "Beaumont" in mind, because it is a very classy French surname (like English surnames ending with - shire, I think...) and it is very suitable for a luxurious yacht. But of course, I could be mistaking...
English surnames don't tend to end in "shire", you know... I can find a Wiltshire in the local phonebook, but only the one. Certainly no one would be called Gloucestershire or Worcestershire if they could help it! (Think of the spelling and pronunciation problems!)
There are loads of Beaumonts in the phonebook though.
Jac, more encouraged to use facts in debates since the flurry of emails from people who prefer them. Those of you who prefer to spout nonsense may continue to do so to your hearts' contents.
Adeline, actually we (Belgians) don't get to see the finale until a couple of weeks. But I saw "Bowmont" in the scripts and now in Tennant's post so I thought it was time to set things straight :-)) We're up to the first episode with Mr Willis. By the way, what has Rachel/Jennifer done with her hair? What's with the mermaid-look? And also, it was her usual length one week, a week later it was an inch shorter (the tips were cut even) and the next she has very long hair. I know this all takes place in "TV-universe" but I think they could've mentioned something about it in the series. Like another character commenting on her hair (extensions) or something. A change like that in a season opening being unmentioned is normal, but over the course of a week?!
If you come from a country where French is common (like Belgium, or my home, Canada) you start to understand how things are pronounced. For example, Versailles is pronounced VER-SIGH, while many people who don't understand French pronunciation would call it VER-SAILS. Just a quick lesson :-)
You make an excellent point, Cihan. I checked with the IMDb, and found 67 Beaumonts but not a single Bowmont. However, the end credits for the episode say that John Apicella played Mr.Bowmont, so there you go. :)
The MONT in Beaumont is pronounced like the MONT in Montreal, except that it sounds different?
Corrections are always welcome, Cihan, even if they don't work out.:)
I took a look at lastnames on a few geneaology sites, and one in particular was Jewish. It did list 3 Gellars, but it also listed 288 Smiths and 83 Johnsons, which are well-known English names. Many Jews changed their surnames when they left their homes in the 19th century. I would say that this issue of Jewish/Christian for R+M should be laid to rest, since we don't have clear information in either respect.
but havent we seen Monica wear a Jewish star necklace AND a cross...so arent she and ross both? ~Sara~ "Hey, look at me! I'm Chandler. Could I BE wearing more clothes?" "They don't know that we know they know we know." "Actually, it's Ms. Chinandlor Bong." "My Bing-a-ling!"
Well, why do you wear them if you do not believe in either religion? They're supposed to represent your faith, not just be used as another piece of jewelry. Hey, it's Yom Kippur, I have to be a little religous.
~Sara~ "Hey, look at me! I'm Chandler. Could I BE wearing more clothes?" "They don't know that we know they know we know." "Actually, it's Ms. Chinandlor Bong." "My Bing-a-ling!"
Well the cross is something that belonged to my grandmother and she left it to me when she died and the star of David actually came with a charm holder that my dad got me for Christmas a couple of years ago. Simple huh?

That's difficult to answer. I do believe in a higher power but I don't agree with most religions. I was raised in both the Christian and Catholic beliefs but do not follow either. To clarify that my mom is Christian and dad is Catholic.
"Jacqui" wrote in message news:8rtgim$jhe$[email]...
Well I never said that I knew much about any of the religions but what I meant was Baptist and Catholic. I was in a hurry and didn't pay that close attention to what I put down. And frankly I'm getting sick of certain people insulting others intelligence. And a good valium could help some Ha Ha! just kidding.
You may want to consider that some Catholic people might have found your post disenhearting, if not offensive. It *does* matter whether you say Baptist or Christian, because the post implies that Catholics are not Christian, and with your definition, implies also that only Baptists are Christian. Don't be in such a hurry over a topic that deserves thought. Go ahead, pay attention to what you put down. It's a good skill to have.
Christians follow the footsteps of Christ as outlined in the Bible. The Bible only. This may apply to Baptists. Catholics use many other books in their religion, the Cathicism <sp> for example. They worship the Pope, so I can see why someone would class Baptists/Christians and Catholics under separate banners.
They do? funny, I didn't know the pope was God! I think Catholics take AUTHORITY from the Pope, which is why the church split in the first place! because people were questioning the authority of the pope to the authority of the Bible.
so I
No, I still can't see it. Catholism was the original Christian religion before the Schism. So how could they take Catholic to not being Christian. And also, the worldwide Church community is reffered to as the Catholic Church. If I got any thing wrong here I apologise.
What kind of a nut are you??? I've been a Catholic all my life, and I don't know a single person who worships the Pope. Many people considor him appointed by God, but they don't worship him. Get your facts straight!!
Thanks, Jacqui. That one made my head hurt. A Christian is any person who believes that Jesus Christ was God incarnate, and that he was crucified to take away sin. Catholics believe that, and some more stuff. A person who believes Jesus was a Good Man is not a Christian. Not prosthelytizing, just defining some very elementary Western theology.
Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Claire Abraham doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...
Thank you. I honestly can't believe that someone would call Catholicism and Christianity; they're the same thing, it's just that one is derived from the other. Now, if you were to say that Catholics and *Protestants* were people who followed two different derivations of Christianity, technically you'd be right (but given my background, I refuse to get into that one any further than that).
Well I'm jewish and I think when I can speak for most of us when I say we usually don't wear crosses. Maybe it's different outside Israel, but I've never seen a jewish person in here wear a cross.
I think that Ross and Monica are Jewish and since they at times are shown to celebrate some aspects of Christmas, I guess that would make them..ah.....Reform?
